Elk Creek Ready to fish Friday...Lets go!!

I'm headed up to Elk in the morning...all my buddies have to work.  I'm watching this storm which is forecasted, but it looks as if it may not hit until afternoon.  If anyone is interested in heading up for a 1/2 day of fishing, shoot me a PM.  I'll be leaving around 5 a.m. and would like to leave the stream around noon.  Tight Lines!

Saturday does not look good at all Jer....Thats why I want to get up before then.  I called up there today (BAC) and the streams were stained but fishable today, tomorrow should be good...there is a pretty bad storm coming Sat....forecasting 4 to 8" of snow where I live...thats about an hour or so south of Erie.  Leave tonight and we'll fish tomorrow.

Anything is possible.  However, the temps are supposed to start dropping pretty good late tomorrow and you may be dealing with snow, slush and ice all at once.  I can certainly give you a report after I fish tomorrow before you plan on leaving and we should know better by then.  Feel free to give me a call, you have my number.

well, i dont think the tribs will be frozen but i hate fishing in the wind, how windy do you think lower elk will be? i know the mouth's will be out of the question because of the waves but lower elk seems like it is protected a little bit from the wind?   I really wana make the trip up it will be my last chance for the entire year

They may not be frozen over, but heavy slush could be a problem.

After reading Shanks report, I'm 2nd guessing myself.  I figured the weather would be a factor in the afternoon, but did not consider the melt off from today....I'm thinking that the drop in temp tonight will allow the streams to come back down?  I'd hate to go up and not be able to fish, but come to think of it, it still beats workin'!  Just be a day taken off wasted....HMMmmmmmmmmm!

Fine!!!  If nobody in here has the balls to twist my arm to go up, I guess I'll just have to suffer and go to work!  You guys are a lot of fun!!!

I would Shank, but I only have until about noon to fish.  I'm only about an hour or so away, but looking at whats to come and the way you described the water, it doesn't seem worth it.  The temp right now is mid thirties and I don't think the streams could recover by morning.  And I don't want to risk fishing all day to drive home in the snow and ice.  I guess my anxiousness (if thats even a word) took me over!  Maybe next week sometime.

Personally, when I see 20 mph. winds, I don't even bother.  Not to mention all the snow that we are supposed to get....usually when we get 4 inches where I live, Erie gets double!

WOW bud  i hate to give advice     i say yeah go and  its terrible  i would feel bad   BUT if it was me and I have not be up in a while  And  it didnt mattter    if I caught  fish  ( and I do just  go up for the sake of  getting out ie.. last sat)

So if I went up I would diffently go to 16-20mile  than after lunch  check upper elk ( BUt dont think  upper elk will be fishable  seeing how conditaions  were when we left today) but you never know!  ...its not fun  freezing your  **** off casting in the wind  and no fish...  But if you get a few hook ups than its worth it  I have made the trip in bad conditions  and  did pretty well  and theres been times I went up and  IT WAS  so bad  I fished an hour and  came home it was that unbearable  .. but  you should be ok on  the east side for sure they drop fast (other than the cooler temps forcasted  but at  24 degrees  thats not too bad  slush should be not bad but cleaning frozen eyelets  on your rod  most of the day you can count on )  so if it was me  and i didnt go today  i WOULD GO   just  the water  gauge read 31 this morning at 3:30AM   and last nite it was 51 Most recent instantaneous value: now is 54  So it droped  pretty  good  from last nite but came back up today  but a front will move in ..  it may be fisable   like i always say you never know  untill you get there

So its like a  poker  game   you get a good hand or a  crappy one ..  the only one  you bluff is yourself .. so if you go up  be prepaird !!! and hope for the best  and know it could be bad conditions

Fished this morning.  Upper elk was still a little high and staind but fishable.  Snow was coming down hardcore.  Left at 12:30 and got home at 3:45.  Normally takes a hair over 2 hours doing the speed limit.  Many wrecks on 79.  If you plan to fish tomorrow good luck but personally wouldn't waste the gas.  The winds were bad enough today and my centerpin froze up fairly quickly.  20mph winds blowing snow in your face, not for me.

I fished the project waters of Walnut today and the bite was slow.  The snow was not really a problem, but the slush was building up by late afternoon.  The back roads were snow covered making driving difficult.  The  weather report for tomorrow is for more snow, cold temps and wind.

    gilleye,

I was not the guy with the fly rod with the gold reel.  I was using an 11' spey rod with a Lamson reel.  I fished the hole just up from the stop sign up to the Manchester hole.  I was there until about  2:15.  I did talk with a guy who was fishing a new fly rod with a gold reel and an Amish fellow who was fishing the Manchester hole.

Okay, I posponed my trip until Monday, I'm hoping.  Should be cold, but no wind and hopefully the creeks come down some.

Bughawk: Any advice for Monday?  Do you think Elk would start freezing up again by Mon.?  Anyone?
