This month they will go in. I don't know if there is a set date but once they go in fishing is usually best done somewhere that they ain't, which is nowhere..

Usually in Mid March. When the fingerlings get to be about 2 inches long. Wont be too far off. The sucker run should be starting on the next thaw. Chris

For fly-guys (and gals) you can fish the same patterns, just tie them larger. Even when the little guys bite, they won't get hooked, and the big boys will still hit. In fact, I've found they hit better on larger flies in the Spring anyways. Then again, I throw streamers and big bugs most of the time anyway.

Could be, in fact I "heard" that some were stocked last week. My understanding is that a change in their behavoir in the raceways lets the culturists know when they are ready.

Yes this is good idea but i would rather not mess with them, they are too valueable to the next few years runs so I start trout fishing the dhalos. Just my opinion. One more trip this weekend and one around may for smallies and then call it quits til thanksgiving.

Didn't you once advocate C&R so there would be more fish left in the spring? Now you are saying don't fish for them.

I suggested C&R to keep fish in the creeks all the time not JUST the Spring. Also I'm just saying that I won't be fishing after the smolts go in....do what you want but be careful with the little guys.

yes, be careful with those little pirhanas! At least that's what it seems like when fishing after the stocking. You'd think they'd never seen food! I try to walk till I find a place not infested with them.

Time to break out the 3 wt and hit the DAHLOS. The bright side of that is it's like 10 mins from my house. Down side it's no steelie. But least it won't b a $80 around trip for me. Gas at 3.19 a gallon. And i can turn around if the creeks are blown out and be home in a couple mins. And the wife won't be able to call me and interfere with my fishing cause my cell doesn't get any service out their in the hollows....... Yes peace at last ,and i don't have to combat fish. Avid give me a call I'll fish with ya. Centerpin_drift!~

If you start catching smolt, do like T.T. said, put on a bigger fly or just move and find a different hole.

we usually dont have too many problems with them using fatheads.if they do bite they dont swallow the hook so they can be put back in fast.i guess thats one time lugging that minnow bucket around is an advantage.

If you're getting "smoltified", move to different hole, or TYPE of holding water. Chances are you wouldn't catch any Steel where you were anyway.

Yeah, When are those boat anglers gonna start contributing for all the food we stream anglers provide for THEIR Walleye?

How big typically are the smolts? Are they a nuisance to catch or are they somewhat enjoyable? I am assuming that if you are able to get away from where they stocked them you are ok. Also, do they stock every trib? I am probably going to hit up 20-Mile next weekend and I usually park in the parking lot right off Rt. 5. I am assuming this is where they will put the smolts.

The smolts are typically a bit smaller than "legal" size, 4-6 inches. Some do reach legal size, and may be creeled by Tout anglers, but I doubt many. The PF&BC stocks only Browns for pellet head season, and INFORMED anglers can easily differentiate the two. They are stocked in all 4 west side streams, as well as 20,12,and "I believe" 4 mile on the east, and in the bay. Local clubs stock some of the other eastside streams, as well as the major streams. They are stocked in several locations along the streams, and can be found through out shortly after the stockings. You CAN avoid them to a reasonable degree. They typicall will not be in the sam "piece" of water as the Steelhead. If you are being assaulted by Smolt at the head of a pool, move to the tailout. If the pool is loaded, move the ripples, and fast runs near them. As the water warms in the spring, this is where most Steelhead will be found anyway. Avoid using natural baits such as eggs, or maggots, (good sized monnows should be ok ). Use bigger flys such as buggers, and streamers, as opposed to small egg patterns, and nymphs. The PF&BC obviously believes that incidental mortality from creel, or mishandling is minimal. Otherwise the streams would be closed, rather than stocked for regular Trout season. I tend to agree, but extra (such as barbless hooks, and bigger baits ) is still advisable.

I was able to find a stocking page on the fish and boat website, but it doesn't have dates marked. That will make it difficult. They say for 20 mile that it is from the SR 20 bridge down to the Dohler property line. Is this the property that is posted above the bridge off Rt. 5? If so that is good for me because I like to fish from the mouth up to that bridge. Also, I am guessing that the fishing the Erie tribs is different than other state trout waters? Like it doesn't close on any of the tribs from March 1st-Opening day of trout? Also, what is the creel limit and size for this time of year? Thanks!
