Any North Pier (Presque Isle) recent info?

I grew up visiting grandparents in Erie and often fishing off North Pier at Presque Isle, near the Coast Guard Station.  I am hoping to bring my own little kids up there soon.  Does anyone have any info about a few basics: (1) We don't care what we're catching and releasing as long as the kids actually catch a few of something/anything.  Is North Pier area still a decent spot for doing that?; (2) Is it better to use live bait or lures at that spot?  And what size hook is best?; and (3) Any other local tips worth sharing?  Thanks in advance, and happing fishing to all!
