Somehow, I just knew they were gonna blow it. Oh well, there's always next year.

Well that's the end of that era of pens hockey. Having been a pens fan since I was 10, I sure hope the next few years are not like the late 70's/early 80's or the late 90's/ early 2000s. Those teams were brutal.

I don't think there will be that much "down" time. Every team has to go through it. It's how ownership and management handle it is where the rub occurs. Look at Chicago. They went from powerhouse, and the so called best two players in the game, to basement dweller. They haven't been on an upswing since. As long as this new owners group stay away from bad contracts and marginal players, we should be ok here in Pittsburgh.

Going in Pens were definitely the underdog. Taking that 3 to 1 series lead kinda gave us some hope of making the 2nd round and then who knows... they then promptly pulled that rug out.... as stated "OH WELL" .

got to look at the positives, more free time for the garden in the evenings...(when I can fit it around running daughter to work, son's lacrosse and dek hockey practices/games).  Guess I better enjoy while I can, both will be in H.S. next year and sooner than I think, off to college.

With how long the playoffs are, it is basically another season.  No reason playoff hockey should be running into early summer.  I watch maybe a total of 3 games during the pre-season (aka regular season), but try to watch them until bounced.  The playoffs run through some of the best fishing times and one of the busier times of the year kid activities.  I have no issues with them taking an early exit unless their team looks like it could make a deep run.  I doubt many were really thinking that this year.  Being that they are very likely close to rebuild time, it is a little sad.  Especially with Stillers definitely in rebuild mode.  Pirates have been in rebuild mode for most of the past 30 years, as in rebuilding other team's rosters with their top players and nothing in return.  Maybe by the time the kids are in college (mine are 2 years behind your crew), one of those teams will be a contender again.  Having some sports to watch, that actually compete, is a nice thing.  2nd in their conference with more and more televised games, these guys are building a nice following in town.  And doesn't cost a mortgage payment to go to a game...

Don't blink.

One just graduated from college and is moving to Charleston, SC for work.
One will be graduating high school in 3 weeks and is going to Charleston, SC for college.
Got one that I don't know how got to be 12 already.

On the plus side, I'll have free room and board at my daughter's place in Charleston now, so I can go catch redfish any time I want.

Coupled with Fettermen beating Connor Lamb and Summer Lee in the lead, guess it shows that the true middle is almost gone. SmH.

I mean Fetterman supports legalizing pot but he doesn’t want to ban fracking. Sure, the man looks like a cave troll, but he’s still grounded in reality. Other than legal pot, neither Fetterman nor Lee are pushing any truly radical policies.

Mastriano is a Qanon nutter who used his position in the state legislature to try and overturn PA’s 2020 election results.

These things are just not the same.

Love Charleston and Savannah.....hopefully the one that is moving will have a spare bedroom for you guys so your visits won't be too cozy!  You'll need a place to store all your saltwater gear....makes even Erie trolling fishing/gear pale in comparison.  Pretty darn hot and steamy though in the summer.....only way I tolerated TX was being close to the coast and spending all my free time at the beach or out on a boat fishing....

Daughter will be a Jr. and my son a freshman next year.  Time does fly.

Sounds like you need to buy a 16' skiff/bay boat on a trailer and keep it in gated storage down there.....umm....have gas $, will assist!

Speaking of beach any ya'll ever been to Amelia Is., Fernandina Beach area in northern FL?  Fam. wants to try there in late June so we are looking for last min. bookings.   Still "driveable" from here and the fam wants to try somewhere other than the Carolinas this year.  Destin/Miramar Beach just a bit too far for us to drive.

Allegiant Air flys to Elgin AFB for cheap. Although last minute, probably not so cheap. Same thing with finding a place now. NE FL is still one heck of a drive. I could convince myself, but I struggle doing NC drive for a week stay. I hear it is nice there though. The only east coast Florida beach that I have heard being strange, was near Palm Coast, where there are big rocks in the surf. Probably good for fishing structure, but family might not be appreciative for swimming and beach use. Also any of the urban beaches. I’d imagine fishing pretty typical of most summer fishing. Morning and evening have some options, midday is for hanging out with the family on the beach. The back side there looks like it would have a lot of oppertunities for reds and trout.

I couldn't agree more.  Just how politics is with the two party system and primary process.  The emotional voters show up for the primaries, which often are the far left and far right supporters.  We then end up with two polar opposites and are left with a choice of which one is worse to vote against.  Endless cycle that just seems to get more and more extreme.

What's really sad is that Fetterman received 58% of the Democrat vote, double Connor Lamb. The true middle is really gone, at least in Pennsylvania. Fetterman supported Bernie Sanders in the '16 primary, and Bernie supported him in this primary. The man is a progressive socialist.

With bald head and that goatee, he looks like Pharaoh! He appears before the camera dressed in a hoodie and shorts; a fine look for the man who is the Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania.

Well, she's going on a travel nursing contract, so she'll probably be able to afford a pretty nice place with lots of room.  She's got expensive tastes and she'll be making significantly more than my wife and I combined.

When we visit, I'll probably be fishing more backwater than on the beach, and I've got the gear for that.  Two rods and a small backpack are about all I need.  My son will have a couple months in at Charelston Southern by the time we go for Thanksgiving or Christmas, and he's pretty much going to school there to major in duck hunting and fly fishing for redfish - and minor in accounting and finance - so he better have some spots to share with me by then.

When the seasons over and its time to try and resign the 3 big FAs Letang, Malkin, Rust, I hope it's Letang.  Even with his meltdowns and untimely giveaways the man eats minutes on the defensive side and is always on the score sheet.

Rust gets a 6 year extension. I doubt that bodes well for those other 2. I'm thinking they sign Rakell and let Malkin and Letang walk.

I take the Rust signing as a message. He could have commanded 6.5-7 on the open market and instead chose to stay.

If Rust can take less, Geno and Letang can too. I hope they move on from Letang, but it is what it is. He's going to likely want a bit more than his recent contract, but his age and play time are concerns I wouldn't give him more than 3 years. Or Geno.

I say sign Geno 7.1/3 years. sign letang the same if he wants it. The Center market isn't great, and a 2nd line center ain't gonna come from within.

The impending Roe V Wade changes has Democrats galvanized. Fetterman is a household name across PA. (And nationally)
Not surprised he won in a landslide.

Mastriano is a head scratcher for sure. Hey - Trump won so anything is possible but whew am I glad he won the GOP Nom. My goodness.

Well, we pivoted back to SC and Kiawah Is.  All booked up for later in June.  5 min. walk to the beach, 5 min. walk to the Kiawah river on the back side....lots of freshwater ponds stocked with "perch" and bass we'll have access to...just need to dodge the gators....and $250 credit towards beach gear rentals.  4 bikes will take up $200 so the rest may go towards a tandem kayak rental for the week....should make for some fun...just need to see if I got the gear to rig up a kayak cart I can "tow" behind the bike!  I am sure I'll look like quite the redneck, down there esp. but don't care....I resemble that persona up here anyways...  Now, I just need to figure out how to get my surf rods back from my brother...he borrowed a bunch of my salt gear for his FL trip in April and so far, only got my gear bags back.

I made a dolly to transport my 12' aluminum boat from my back yard to my front yard using some wheels from harbor freight, 2x4's, steel rod and ratchet straps.  I bottom out my bed extender on the hill to my back yard.  It would probably work for a kayak trailer, but figuring out something to connect it to a bike would be a challenge, unless you are daring enough to try to hold it with one hand for that far.  Maybe find an old pull behind kid transporter?  You might end up $200+ in repurposed parts and take up 1/4 of your storage though.  You might want to just put on top of your vehicle if only using a few times.  I am all for the redneck contraptions.  I had a milk crate strapped on the back of my bike last year in Emerald Isle.  With pvc 2 rod holders attached.  It held a bucket with my cast net and gear bag stuffed in.  It definitely opened up a few spots that had no parking close by.  It rode nicely, just had to be careful on turns and going under anything.  A lot of the locals have similar setups.

Maybe. The Buffalo Shooter and the now Texas Shooter, both bought their Assault Rifles - weapons capable of immense damage in a very short amount of time, completely legally.

Maybe we oughta make it a bit more difficult to purchase such items?

We’ve become so desensitized to this stuff that a bunch of dead kids barely moves the needle.

The thing is, these types of events are still pretty rare, statistically speaking. Most of the gun violence in this country doesn’t involve mass shootings like this. The only way this stuff ever stops is to get rid of the HUGE amount of firearms in this country and make guns MUCH MUCH harder to obtain FOR EVERYBODY. And that just won’t ever happen, so we are gonna have to live with it and accept it as part of the country we live in.

It’s a terribly sad and depressing way to think about this issue, but at this point, school shootings are as American as apple pie.

Re: So what is OFF TOPIC allowed? 2022/05/25 10:32:59 (permalink)
The two shootings are completely different IMO.  I think both would have ended up resorting to use a car or other if no assault rifles available.  Do I think they should be a little harder to get, definitely for people like these monsters, but how do we know?  I am not sure if it stops the TX massacre and most likely not the NY massacre if assault rifles aren't as easily available.  That NY guy had a lot of planning, that he could have easily replaced assault rifle with a car barreling through a crowded area of black people or other.

Maybe it is about time that we bring back state hospitals?  I believe this was mentioned a few years ago, but no traction.  There has to be some sort of mental illness for anyone capable of killing their grandmother that raised them, then innocent children after.  There are kids in just about every school in America that we as a society are too chicken chit to "be insensitive to mental illness", that we turn a blind eye to them as future mass murderers.  It is almost impossible for public schools to have a kid with any sort of "learning disability" to be removed from their school.  No matter how disruptive or how threatening they are to others, beyond actually striking students/teachers on MULTIPLE occasions, then often back in their school a year or so later.  Don't get me wrong, not every kid with a learning disorder should be shipped off to a state hospital or other special school.  But there clearly are some that should not be covered by this.  Many that are in public schools are a clear threat in the making, forced to stay in these schools.  They are likely being left out of things by their peers and even picked on by some, turning their already unstable minds to violence.  Maybe this TX shooter was or wasn't this type of person, but many mass killers fall into this category and many times their peers are not surprised at all by their actions.  These people should have absolutely no means to any firearm.  I'm sure there are laws on the books that prohibit already, if not, there should be.  I would have no issues with Federal agents and others scouring social media posts, seeing they possibly have firearms, and being put in state hospitals or prison if violating.  Those supplying should be held responsible too.  Parents of these kids, I feel for, I really do.  But to give them access to firearms?  There has to be some other activity that you can get them into that doesn't involve the child having any sort of access to a firearm.

The Buffalo one is definitely different.  This falls on the shoulders of white nationalism being normalized beyond the secret back room meetings of the klan and others.  Being spread on social media and other more mainstream media now.  In his mind and many others, they are told they are fighting a war and actions like this are justified.  Possibly mental illness has this person to the point of taking action like this?  These type of massacres have been happening for years.  Timothy McViegh and others have been in this "war" or similar "wars" for years before it was normalized like it is now.
