Olympics

Hope every participant who 'takes a knee' looses by a wide margin.

Used to enjoy watching several of the events but don’t think I’ll be tuning in this time. Tired of the protest and people disrespecting the flag and the anthem of the country they are there to represent. From what I have heard of the upcoming NFL season chances are I won’t be watching any of that as well!

Lowest viewership in over 33 years--no wonder who wants to watch another show where the participants are being' woke'.
Over 33 years ago the participants wrapped themselves in our flag-- no more.

Opening ceremonies were down, the actual games are on the rise of total viewers (streaming).  Having in South America 5 years ago helped a lot, being more in line on the time zones.  I watched some of the opening ceremonies before work last Friday.  I wasn't about to tune into ceremonies that were on a 12 hour tape delay.  Hard enough to watch sports on that delay without hearing of a score, etc.

Once ever four years, you can watch non-stop the best athletes in their given sport.  I watched some table tennis today and some badminton.  Yesterday I watched some surfing, beach volley ball (women's of course), water polo, swimming, soccer (some was Olympics other was Gold Cup) and some gymnastics.  Not sure if any of them protested racial inequality or crimes against humanity.  My tightie whities are not so far up my crack to care that some are exercising their right to peacefully protest.  Maybe they should break into the Capitol waiving Confederate battle flags or Trump flags, since that is obviously just fine???  Your loss for not watching some of the best entertainment on Earth right now, to protest a few protesters...  I'm sure Tucker and crew will be laughing all of the way to the bank for convincing many to tune into them and their peaceful message of unity instead.

I should have stated it, "voted against Trump".  I'm guessing that 95% of votes cast for Biden, were votes against Trump.

Great post!  Last couple of days I've watched many amazing stories unfold at the Olympics, mostly involving teenage Olympians displaying maturity and sportsmanship beyond their years.  While on the other side of the world, a former president of the United States is encouraging Americans to boo the women's US Olympic soccer team.  What a pathetic little man.

I looked up what the ROC was about.  Basically a loophole in getting Russia into the Olympics after it was discovered they were running a state sponsored doping scheme.  Putin is such a good guy, just misunderstood...  That said, only those that were able to prove they had no connection to the scheme were allowed to participate.  At first, I thought, typical, let Russia get away with anything.  But then thought, if those athletes weren't doping, why should they be punished for their government's actions.

I'm glad you could find something you enjoy and just enjoy it.

Sometimes, it's ok to just zone out, watch some obscure sport or activity and just take it in.

The Olympics, while I disagree with them happening in the first place, have been a great distraction from the things that ail our country every day.
I learned that badmitton is called BAD MIN TON all over the world except for the US apparently.

Watching the Today show hosts have to choke on congratulating the skeet gold medal winners because they were regular family and military folks who just worked hard to achieve out of the spotlight and won in a sport involving guns.

Nice! I saw that the mens won 3 gold I believe.

What would qualify them as "regular family" folks though?

Alaska has only one Olympic size pool in the whole state.

I think something is up with the quote function on the boards. I understand what you mean now.

I thought you meant people who weren't big time sponsored and that jazz.

The Highschool girl winning gold was simple incredible. The support she received from her classmates was awesome.

Same here.  Swimming is different in the sense that you are not fully aware of how your competition is doing.  Most of the time they don't know they won until they take off their goggles and look at the "scoreboard".  The reaction from the Alaskan girl was priceless.

Gotta give Biles  credit while she occasionally is getting bashed.
We have all had bad days or even a few bad days where it just isnt like it should be-- she got out and then stood by giving her teammates much  support from the sidelines'
That hadda be difficult.
She is the best in her field and presents herself very very well- hope she gets whatever it is outa her system and comes back in the individuals.

Good to see Katie Ladecky win last night in that long swim, with the US teammate getting second.  Every time they say Ladecky, all I can think of is Lil Dicky though...  Dave.

Not sure what to think of Simone Biles drama.  I'm not a gymnastics fan, so really doesn't mean much to me, but will likely be talked about and turn political if it hasn't already...  I mean, she is...

The women in gymnastics are usually little girls and I don't want to watch skimpily dressed 12 year olds and 20 year olds that look like 12 year olds.  The guys, although incredible athletes, is just not my thing.  They can do some crazy flips and stuff, but it all looks the same to me after 20 minutes.  I hate hearing GOAT all of the time too, so not sure if this will amplify or go away a bit?  Maybe she is the best ever?  She crushed things for a long time and seems to be her end.  Kind of feel bad for her that it is happening on a world stage instead of some gymnastics events that only true fans watch.

According to the announcers, just about every other event "the greatest of all time" is competing in...  The term gets kind of watered down, but typical media over sensationalizing everything.  That said, it is the Olympics and these are the best currently in the world at what they do...  I am also not a fan of sports that rely so much on judges scoring.  Especially being a casual fan at best of the sports and not knowing/able to see the specifics of what the judges are looking at, I just can't get into much of it.  Whether it is gymnastics, diving, surfing, or others that rely so much on judging.  Just like the obscure sports of the Olympics, I can watch for 20 minutes or so until no longer entertained and go to a different one for 20 minutes...

Great to see her get the Bronze medal on the beam.  At first I thought she may have tarnished her great career by dropping out of the other competitions, but I no longer think this.  The amount of support / mentoring she provided to her younger teammates and the athletes from other countries was inspiring and it should add, not detract, to her legacy.  Truly a class act.

Agree 100%.

It appears that she would agree with me on the media needing to cool it with the "greatest of all time" sensationalizing.  Let the gymnastic experts/historians discuss that.

The media doesn't put that type of pressure on 99.9999% of pro athletes (our major pro sports) that are getting paid 20 times the amount that these top few Olympians are.  When they are giving that title to an active pro athlete, they have likely played for a long time and built their media presence over those years too, i.e. Tom Brady, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Dale Earnhardt, etc.  These Olympians are in front of a camera maybe once per year, only once per 4 years do many get a major audience.  I can only imagine the past few months worth of hounding the media has put her under.  I can completely understand her having a mental breakdown.  Unfortunately for her, I think her commercial appeal may be done.  That is where 90% of her income is from.  I'm sure some company will give her a cush job for who she is though, so can't feel too sorry for her.

Suni Lee is likely next...  The USA has had a different winner of the all around gymnastics the past 4 Olympics.  Pretty sure they all end up getting similar treatment from the media.  I wonder why they don't repeat???  I wonder in 3 years, we'll start hearing how Suni Lee is the greatest of all time?
