Lakes or rivers and streams??

Just looking to get some peoples opinions on wether they like to fish lakes or rivers and streams.  Please include a brief explanation of why you prefer the certain body of water.

Personally love rivers and streams.  I like being able to read moving and the fish always seem to be me less pressured than lakes...

Depends on the species I fish for and my mood. Sunrise on a large body of water are nice as well as a small mountain creek. OTH

I like both....I love fishing moving water. I also love fishing the calm, glass like water of a lake in the evening, although I haven't done that for a while.

For all things there is a season. I really don't like one over the other. It's not the fish, it's the anticipation... Love watching the rods in the holder trollin waiting for the familiar thump or release on a rigger. Love following the path of the float on it's way over a percieved pod of fish. I say percieved cause I'm not really into sight fishing. Love the quiet of the streams. Love the quiet calm of the lake (although many times it's not). The thing I love most of all is the anticipation.  Dave

As long as I'm holding the rod in my hand I'm interested.I find trolling a bit boring, the boat hooks the fish and you fight it.If I had to pick one over the other I would go with the stream/brook/river.

    Pa,

When your holding the rod, it and the line hook the fish, and you just reel it in. Not really, YOU have to make THE cast, set THE retrieve, and select THE lure.

The same is true when trolling. YOU have to find tHE depth, THE speed, and THE correct lure, and color. You can't just toss something off the back, and let the BOAT catch the fish.

kyler, i agree that the elk river is really nice!  I've spent many days enjoying the scenery and fish on that river.  The only thing I dont like about it is how crowded it gets during the season. You have to go outside of the major season to enjoy it to its fullest.

Have you fished many of the other streams in that area?  My absolute favorite river is North Fork of the Cherry River which is only a couple hours away from the Elk.  Much less fishing pressure even though it runs right along a paved two lane highway.

There is nothing like a good day on a river or stream.  I prefer to fish moving water.  Lake fishing is okay but only when I'm in Canada.

I would have to say trout fishing a nice flowing stream, listening to the gobblers on the hillsides as i am setting the hook into a nice explosive brookie, in the spring. Then as we start to get warmer nothing like a pair of shorts wading the stream casting dry fly's and watching your fly disappear, and their is a beautiful bow or brown, brook on the end of it on a size 18 ant. Then as we get into July nothing beats taking the boat out to number 7 dam and anchoring and casting 8 inch suckers and holding on for dear life when the big old Flathead rips your rod outta of your hands beautiful. Then labor day weekend i am in Erie exploring, walking, checking things out see the new lays of the creek, new pockets holding area, Then when steel hit the creek, it's on like donkey Kong,,,,,is it fall yet again.

Fishing the yough river has the benefits of a river and a stream, fast current and deep pools, plus the ability to catch many species, love my home waters, but I'd love to try those lakes in Canada

I've done a lot of trolling in the past, fresh and salt, and I got bored with it,things change.Just my way of looking at it,I have nothing against it just prefer to be HOLDING the rod and getting the proper drift on MOVING water.

i love stream fishing mostly because of my love for the trout.whether its stockies or steelhead, spinning or fly gear i love fishing for trout. i dont know how to explain it but stream fishing to me is more of a one on one experience w/ the fish. im not in a boat waiting for a bite im in the stream casting to the fish, occasionally seeing a swurve before i feel it. and usualy seeing it once i hook it. the colors on the first trout of the year always make it worth it. a month ago i went to elk for my first trip in 2 years. the colors on that first steelhead gave me the fever all over again it was like my first one..ive been back many times since and keep slammin em and love it.going to try tomorrow

elephanthead i definately agree w/ you about the anticipation. the countdown from 700-800 on opening day of trout.....the ride up to the tribs, not being able to sleep the night before.thats what makes it so special when u get that first one,or even if u dont waiting for it to happen the feeling in ur gut that goes to the shakes in ur arm and hands. i hope i never lose it

    Pa,

I dig it. We all have our preferences. I'm just saying that each style has it's own challenges, and skill requirements.

    Chris,

I WILL troll for Eyes, cause it fills the cooler. I LOVE to troll for Kings, cause 200-300 feet or more of line screaming of my reel makes me yell YIPEE!

Well, I used to be a lake fisherman, with some occasional stream trips, but this year has changed it. My perfect location, would be elk, on a 50 degree fall day. preferably a Friday.

I troll for Muskies a lot in the summer, and it's WORK. Between the speed, depth, counting line, sunburn, snagging stumps. And the fact that they're bastids with teeth!

Spoons right brother, each type has its own challenges.

Fishing, quite possibly the last true sport that requires you to hold your rod all day long.

My wife said I golfed too much...so I started fishing.

I enjoy fishing streams for Steelies.  This my most favorite fishing.  Second to it is drifting small creeks in the summer casting Rapalas for muskies and occasionally for smallies.  Third would be casting poppers and surface lures in small ponds and lakes for largemouths.

During my annual trip to the Outer Banks of NC, I enjoy fishing from the piers for bluefish and speckled trout.  If the surf fishing is good, I will get out my surf rod and head down to the surf.

Something about wet wading for smallies.  I think I'd love wading the flats too, something about a salt breeze when the tides change when clamming makes me think about fishing flats.
