When NY started saying they needed help later on 9/11 went in and took Vacation time- was very near retirement and had no problems getting the time.
It was our wedding anniversary -now its our 50th.
Took a train from New Haven in the middle of the night and met up with a dozen or so others heading to Zero.
Daylight of 9/12 found us at the -general- South West corner of the disaster.
Most of the responders were over on the East side and we were more or less alone.
Things were- understandably- just getting going in the efforts at the massive disaster site.
We had anticipated looking for survivors but the absolute devastation and gore made that hope -well- just a very distant hope.
We went in and tried-no radios - no equipment but our hands and emergency experience.
Hours later there were hundreds at our location and some heavy equipment too.
You could see the massive recovery operation become organized.
At days end with no sleep for over a day returned to the building up river where we had first gone and registered and got sent down to Zero- there had been a couple of hundred responders there when first arriving in the wee hours, returning it was thousands- not to mention row upon row of emergency vehicles and crews from across the Nation.
Americans stepped up to the plate.
Your right Fisher- often thought of- at the oddest of times .
