While I disagree with the wholesale reductions in Police funding I will be the first to agree there are far too many minor social calls that the Police are presently required to respond to for lack of other resources.
While a Patrolman for a few years they seemed to require much time off of normal criminal or vehicular issues we were confronted with on a daily basis.
The cows got loose from a nearby pasture and pooped on my lawn.
There is a snake in my shrubs.
My neighbors cut grass from his mower gets on my side of the line.
My neighbor makes too much noise.
My neighbors dog barks too much.
The nearby factory is noisy.
A neighbor doesnt keep up his property.
Car tires on the nearby highway make too much noise.
The peepers( frogs) at night in the spring keep me awake.
I see a racoon walking around my backyard- also woodchucks lions and bears OH MY.
My neighbor argues with me.
Shade from the trees alongside the road is causing my shingles to rot.
I dont have trees but leaves get on my yard in the fall.
Kids walking by make noise and I just know its only to bother ME.
Shrubs in somebodys front yard are too tall in violation of a City ordinance.
I see spaceships.
My neighbor has a big wheel in their house that sends out RAYS that are making me nuts.
People throw litter out the car window on my street and I demand you to stop it.
The people down the street, who I dont like, are dealing drugs and I see them carrying big bags of white powder in from the car all the time so make them move.
Motorcycle exhaust pipes are too noisy and somebody drives by on a bike every night.
The road is poorly designed and water builds up in very heavy rains.
The neighbors downspouts are pointed towards my yard.
Some tree limbs are dying along the street so have them cut.
Can you come over and scare my kids so they will listen to me, or go to School etc ( happens a LOT)
We just moved in so can an Officer come over to Bless the house.
A guy comes in every Sunday and eats too much at the all ya can eat buffet.
The list goes on and on with these things- mostly neighbor related and almost impossible to satisfy folks who call the police for them.
In most cases the callers and their complaint are well known to the Officers having responded many times to the complaint year after year.
Yes = zoning issues- animal control issues- mental issues and others abound but NOT ( in most cases) requiring the police.
There is cause for others to respond to many of these issues but -in a real world-not enough other people waiting for these calls to respond in a reasonable manner.
They take up a HUGE amount of Officer time and of course the associated report writing as these callers are commonly the ones making complaints about the officer 'doing nothing' to supervisors and politicians who all demand further action to' satisfy the un satisfiable and stop them from calling -up the ladder.
These callers- who can be very persistent- will be making MORE calls as police presence diminishes and Politicos and supervisory staff wont have the onions to say NO we cant respond.
The end result will be IMHO to STILL send an officer to make a report to whoever eventually responds in the future--solves nothing.
( those were REAL calls- often over and over and over- the list could go on for pages.)
