Pics from the Amazon for peacock bass- what a trip!!!

Well, I just got back from the Amazon in Brazil on Sun. What a fabulous adventure. Fly fishing for peacock bass is a riot, and they are truly a beautiful and amazing fish. But just being in the Amazon alone is amazing- what a remarkable setting.

The lodge itself is remarkable as well, particulalry considering the location and the daunting logistics. Great food, great service, and very nice and comfortable amenities. It is located on the Agua Boa River, a clearwater tributary of the Rio Negro, which is the largest trib of the Amazon.

Over the 7 days of fishing, I saw lots of crocodiles (caimens), big flocks of macaws and parrots, huge storks, freshwater dolphins, and more varieties of fish than one can imagine. But the peacocks are what make it, and man are they awesome. The biggest that I landed was 17lbs, and caught a lot of fish between 12 and 16lbs. The smallest ones are the butterflies, then the spotted (which I feel are the prettiest and the toughest to land for their size) and then the big boys, the temensis.

Seriously, if you've ever thought about going to Brazil to chase these fish, you should do it. Anyone who is looking for more info please feel free to PM me. I'll be going back next year too, so if you care to join me, let me know.

Here's some pics from the trip- enjoy!

I am very glad you did not put the "feet" picture here.    Every cast you make is one step closer to being a single man!!!

I just HAVE to pick on you; it wouldn't be right if I did not.

They are such a neat lookin' fish.   I fully expected you to wrestle a giant snake.

That looks really cool.  Those fish are so colorful.  I heard they fight like crazy.  I presume you had a good time.

    Dan,
When you're finished unpacking, check out this webpage. It may come useful if you go on anymore of these trips...

    http://www.divorce360.com/?utm_source=yahoo&utm_medium=cp&utm_term=adgroup1&utm_campaign=Campaign%2B001&OVRAW=divorce%20advice&OVKEY=divorce%20advice&OVMTC=standard&OVADID=16746141022&OVKWID=44026535522

That was pretty funny- made me smile...

So, you want to go with me next year? You'd love it; it was my favorite trip so far this past year. It's a looooong trip down, but well worth it. Basically, peacocks are like smallies on steroids. They are without a doubt the coolest looking fish around! I sent you an e-mail the other day, don't know if you got it or not. I'll put some more pics up soon when I have a moment.

Well, I told the wife that we aren't making anymore babys...lol
Sooooo, you can bet your favorite fly rod that I'm going next year. I've caught a few small peacocks in Miami and that was a BLAST.

Were you guys just blind casting structure or casting at wakes and things? Any differant species?

Cool- I'll send you the info soon. As for the fishing, there was a lot of sight fishing to cruising fish in the river. They're tough, and very spooky in the shallows, more similar to bonefishing really. In the lagoons, you're fishing to structure, or blind fishing the holes and deeper channels.

Some of the inlets off of the main river are spring-fed as well, and there were some very large fish in those spots as well.

As far as other species goes, I landed a few pirahna, some oscars, jacundo, some sort of jack-like fish, dogfish, freshwater barracuda too. I hooked a piaracu that was well in excess of 100lbs on my 8wt- took me WAY into my backing, jumped once and threw the hook- pretty cool though. A few of my guys caught arawana too- I hooked one, but it spit the hook on the first jump. They were pretty cool. Some of my guys caught pacu, and there some other oddball fish thrown in too.

    I'll call you soon.

    Jon-

You really need to get that Elk hunt out of the way so that we can do some globe trottin' to some exotic locales!

    Dan,

Don't the piaracu have some awesome teeth?  I was watching a guy fish for them somewhere in South America and he finally caught one and what a wild looking fish it was.  Almost prehistoric in appearance.

    Dave-

Yes, they are very prehistoric-looking. Like a cross between a bowfin and a tarpon. Or maybe a caelocanth. Very cool though. Unfortunately, I didn't get a good look at it's teeth, as it was 100+ yards away when it jumped! It was a cool shot- the guide started pointing behind the boat, and I could see the fish easing up behind us. I didn't have time to grab a 10wt or anything, so I just threw what I had on (I think that it was a 3/0 deceiver...) The fish swam right up and ate- very intense, and one of the best eats I've had so far...

    Let's get together soon.

nah, doesn't do it for me. The flies are too gawdy, the fish are too colored, and there are too many varieties to think about. Never know what you're going to catch next. I like consistency...

Amazing pics man! That pirahana seriously looks like it's ready to kill you.

Also, are the Silverish fish the smaller peacocks you refered to? They're beautiful.

And, Bug, I think you may have saw Larry Dahlburgh (sp.) I've seen him get out of the boat and bank a pacu, at least I think it was. Looked like a bowfin on steroids!

I also noticed is some pics your sleeves are down and others rolled up.

I ASSume it was pretty hot and humid down there, so were those "bug resistance" tactics?
