Presque Isle Ice Report

I just thought I would create a thread for people who are out on the ice the next few days to post about the conditions on different parts of the bay.  Your advice makes it easier for others to decide whether to fish or not :)

Considering a couple people went for a cold swim this weekend, I'll pin this thread to the top.

Hopefully the ice will stay around a little longer.

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...

since the ice still has a base layer to work off of, the weekend looks good...its probably still 1-3" so as long as the temps stay low like the forecast says...everyone should be ok...

the ice on misery is cold. kinda like the water under it that my buddy bathed in yesterday....and not by choice....some real nice guy filled in his hole with snow and slush and my buddy stepped in the hole....on his way down with one leg his other one slipped and he stretched out his "tackle" pretty good. be careful out there....and if you wanna help guys avoid your drill spots.....leave the ring of slush around the outside of it.....

that brings up a good point, is it really necessary to have the 10" power augers out on 4-5" of ice, 6" hand augers will be fine for anything you bring out of misery and the such...much harder to step in a 6 inch hole too...

This morning on the news they said there is a warning to fisherman who want to go out on the ice.  Be careful, especially on the bayfront and in the middle of the bay.

Wow was fishing horrible Saturday. Except for the nice day with the sun finally out in full force. It was nice to be out. Fished stink hole, caught one perch out of 4 guys with me. Water is so merky you cant see your minnow after 10 in of going down the ice hole. Guys with fish cams couldnt see for an inch away. I think if you caught something it was just fish running into your bait. Oh saw one guy catch a steel head.

Some of us older guys have shoulder or back problems. I can drill a couple holes before my shoulder gives out. And thats with my 7" laser. I bought a power auger just for this reason. Mines an electra 2000, 8". Last summer i found a sale on 6" to fit my powerhead. Cost $150 just for the auger blade.  My point... " watch where you're walking" no matter what size hole someone is using. There's a lot of reasons people use what they've paid for already.

i wasnt trying to start a bad thing here....cuz i think this is a great thing...letting people know about ice conditions. I was just pointing out that filling in your auger hole isnt always the smart move....and i have no doubt that the person that did it was not trying to jam anyone up. i always pack the snow in a ring around the hole anyways...and then add to it as i fish the hole and remove slush....and i also realize that a layer of snow makes that disappear as well....just like chauncy said....gotta watch where u r walking.

do you think the fluffy snow we have been getting will inhibit the ice recovery? I was thinking of trying to fish tomorrow or thursday.

Fished the bay yesterday afternoon in 8 feet of water. water was cloudy. bite was slow (few perch/nothing great). open water off EYC. ice was 4 in at most but hard. ice should thicken up some with last nights cold temps. anyone else fish the bay yesterday?????????

fished two days in a row now, nothing but a little perch and a few on the camera, up to 11 ft of water so they must be gettin deeper.  Ice is good, real thick off chestnut ten inches in some spots

I don't think today is doing much. With the amount of snow on the ice, and how thick it is, it would take a few days of warm weather.
