Did well last week. Fresh run of fish came in early December. Lotsa guys doing well past few weeks. I’m be ahht again Friday.

Didn't crush 'em today, but we got into some dumb ones late in the day to put an end to a long ride on the struggle bus.
Everyone I talked to on Elk today said the same. We fished low, middle and high. Other than the ones we caught, I saw 4 bent rods on Elk all day. Water looked real nice, but was FRIGID with lots of edge ice and melting snow. Getting a little dirty by the end of the day.
I hate fishing Walnut anymore, but figured why not give er a shot mid afternoon after no bites in the AM. Walked from the stop sign hole all the way up to the falls. Nobody - literally - fishing from the end of the wall up to the Manchester Hole. Water there was gin clear. I'm sure I missed a few here and there in the skinny water, but other than a small pod surrounded by two guys in the Manchester Hole, I didn't see a fish. Haven't fished Manchester in a few years, and boy has it changed, and not for the better.

12/23/19 tried the lower end of 20 mile and saw 0 fish in stream and caught 0 from about 2:30-3:30. Wind was supposed to be SW it was more like W and blowing pretty good. A fisherman told me he got 2 and he was parked at the lot above rt 5

Fished mid and upper Elk Saturday thru Monday - caught a few but had to work for them. Just about everyone I talked to experienced the same results. Most of the fish caught were coaxed out from under shelf ice if it existed where we were fishing. Some areas on upper Elk had some major ice jams which I assume are mostly gone by now.

Never did the One Fly DD. I'm a knuckle draggin', mouth breathin, dyed in the wool bait chucker. Tried the flea pole off and on over the years for pelletheads, but I'd rather catch a bunch of fish than look good trying to catch fish. lol!

There's nothing that says you have to use flies when wearing yer Orvis or Simms waders, and yer Costa sunglasses!  And those Patagonia Buffalo hats are sure chic and trendy!!

Lucky, my 16 year old is a very fashion conscious fly fisherman. He has Orvis waders and Costa sunglasses, and the Patagonia fish and buffalo hats. He is a literal walking cliche when he’s fishing for steelhead.
And he’s wearing off on his little brother (pictured) except for that he still likes chucking bait with dad. And he gets Hodgman waders till he’s done growing.

Back in the olden dayz, I took a myriad of offerings with me every trip . Several different baits and boxes of flies and yarn . I discovered flies, yarn and artificial was more productive some days and bait others . It was about 50/50 believe it or not. discovered that presentation and/or color, size 'n shape had more to do with making them bite than anything else Observing the flyrodders working their stuff (those that didn't right angle chuck 'n duck drag their junk...in essence float fishing with a flyrod) i saw it drifted a different presentation difficult to do with float and spinning rod ...and near impossible in the fast water cuts having already gained great confidence in flies under a float rod, made the transition to flyrod easy. I made the transition not because I'm a "snob" and wanted to separate myself from the knuckledragging bait chuckers  But because I could present my junk in more ways than float rod Moral of that longazz story??? on a slow day that bait ain't getting it done, don't hesitate to tie on bugs or yarn for a try ..L.T.A.

Yep, this is me as well. Adaptability is key...it's also fun. I love to pocket water nymph for trout and steelies, I also equally love to spin live minnies for trout.

Yeah doesn’t seem like much of a December run like there was last year and the year before. Have talked to a few friends who have fished in the last week or two and it was tough for them too. Even the social media trout gawds seem to be having to work hard for bites. Seems the ones who are on the cricks a couple times a week have found some and keep on em with C&R but I haven’t seen many fresh looking fish.
My boys do love their fishing, that’s for sure! Steelhead fishing has been tougher for us this year than the last two or three. Both boys had two or three double digit days last year. None this year.

We got a good early December run of freshies the same exact week this year as last year. I know lotsa duuds who did real well and a few who still are.

Sax, Singles,Skein. beads . Flys of all types and formation, caught steel with everything at one time or another. minnows early, eggs later usually works for me, never found a "sure thing" that works everytime. best ever, once during a spring run years ago below follies i actually caught 1 on a piece of ham out of my samich. i think the biggest thing is fishing to unspooked fish but now a days thats really hard to come by. maybe we should have assigned " Beats" that only you are allowed to fish that day? I KNOW DREAM ON!! unless of course you own some of the crick or have the cabbage for a lease or private club membership. regretably ive spent all my fishin money on gear to fish with.
