Bait?

Mostly buy my bait at BAC, closer to my fishing holes.  Where does everyone else...BAC, Poor Richards, etc. and why?

My wife said I golfed too much...so I started fishing.

I have been fishing flies with very little luck.  No doubt it is the user and not the flies or fish.  Definately more luck with minnows from my end and from those I talk with who carry their stringer limit into Poor Richard's.

I've frequented BAC, Poor Richard's and Elk Creek Sports for years and I have to say that they are all very good and have always been very generous with their minnows or emeralds.  All three are on Rt. 5.  Each shop has their strengths and weeknesses and thats why I'll go to them all.

Everyone has their place that they like too go. Myself i love B.A.C  on route 5. I honestly couldn't say enough about them, George,Mark,Mike Tome, Rich, and the other  fellows their, have always treated me and my friends and other people that i told to go their like gold!  Very helpful in many ways as in everything. I am very pleased with how they treat us with respect and kindness and some funny guys work their as well. It's not about who's this, who's that, But i just never felt welcomed or wanted at Poor Richards! And that's fine. I am sure all the bait stores get tired of dealing with the same old crap day in day out. I guess you just have to shop around to you find out what's best for you personally. But only from experience of making 35,40 trips a year B.A.C Bait and Tackle on West 5 has my vote 100%.

Presque Isle Angler is by far the most generous with pricing and quantities.  BAC at presque isle is horrible, one time i asked for 3 dozen minnows.  When I got to my fishing hole, i counted them and had 35.  Unreal!

Was surprised to see BAC not open @ 6:30 Sunday morning. Went up the road & somehow got goldens mixed in with emeralds. Ran out 1/2 way through the morning and went to see Dan @ Elk Creek Sports and got some really nice emeralds (not counted)

cant understand some of the guys at BAC, Poor richards is always kind to me. Guess its because i drop 30-50 dollars for supplies for the weekend. Heck Their wadding boots are cheaper then walmart and gander mountain And better quality. Also Elk Creek sportsmens is great as well. Especially if you need a pack of smokes or an iced tea.

Ehh I mostly agree with Centerpin, BAC has been my store for 3 years or so. I also never felt welcome or wanted at PR. Which is fine, buisness is buisness. Just the guys at BAC are friendly, full of info, and have a sense of humor along the lines of mine!

Well, the guy who takes your fish at PR to get smoked, is a pretty decent fellow. Funny to boot!

lfosburg    Thats funny i have never stepped foot into B.AC. And ever got ripped off. I have asked for 3 doz of emeralds and gotten 6 dozen. The services their to me is top notch, And anyone that i have ever sent their which has been quite a few people they have always been more that friendly and helpful in many ways. George and the others that work their always have given hot tips of whats up and told me to try here or there. If you don't open your mouth to find out maybe you won't know anymore than what you did before you arrived their. My buddy bought a rod from their that was close too $ 180 and George knocked off some nice money off it just because we do alot of business there. You can't exp et to walk into a bait store once or twice and they are your best friends. It takes time you treat them right they will treat you right! But again everyone has a place that they like to do business with. I used to back in the day would go to PR to get my things i needed and i was watched like a hawk like i was going to steal the cash register, and i was always respectful in every way shape or form. I would ask how was this or how was that i would get a short answer. And that was after i spent $50 or more every time i went their once in a blew moon i would catch the women or guy in a half decent mood. **** on that when i go some where i want to be treated with respect just like they would expect to be treated. And if i have a question i like a honest answer. But heck since i have been doing this long enough now they at B.A.C. Are ask me what's the fishing like and i give them a honest report. And you can ask any of the guys that work their i am the guy that showed them about the Daiichi Hooks - And told them they needed to start carrying them and guess what they did.
They very next time i was their they had a whole self full. Of different styles.  Now if that not customer service i don't know what is. Like i said before i love B.A.C  and will always be my favorite to shop at in Erie. I wouldn't tell anyone to do anything they didn't want to do shop around give them all a try to find who and what you like best. But don't be rude to anyone for trying to make a buck in this world.  Everyone has their favorite.

I have been treated great at both BAC and PR.  I have found (and this may only be coeincidence) that I often run in to a younger more inexperienced guy or kid behind the counter at BAC on the weekend early sometimes.  But hey someone has to open the doors.  Thanks to all the shop owners for keeping us commuters in the loop on the fish....

This gripe is aimed toward bac on peninsula drive. And it looks like my gripe is shared by others. Smitty (jimmy) will always treat you fair.

    Centerpin,

You have given the best advice one can possibly give.  Find a store that suits you best and stick with it.  I found that PR's has the best eggs, so I go there for the eggs.  If you're nice and respectful to them, they are all generally nice and respectful right back.  I like BAC's service and they almost always knock off money on rods and reels there for you.  There has been a few times when I didn't have quite enough money to pay for the stuff I wanted and they let it slide.  I don't ever order more than a dozen minnies at BAC either because if you order more, you end up wasting them at days end anyway since they give you so many...they must not know what a dozen means and I'm not complaining!  Bottom line is this...they are there to try to make a business and they are also trying to make things convenient for us and I appreciate that.  We need to do our best to patronize these shops as much as we can so we can all benefit from this great past time.

As for the BAC on Peninsula, I have only been there a few times.  I cannot say anything bad and I cannot say anything good.  The few times I was there were quick in, get what I needed, and out experiences.

I just was told that Smith's Bait shop is closed permanently. Any one else here the same thing? That's 2 shops closed in 1 month. PR east & Smiths.  I agree with you quite a bit that was said about every shop having weakness & strengths. Just as with comparing Kmart & Wall Mart. Hopefully the new bait shop on the east side(mine) will help serve you fellows well in the coming years when fishing on the east side.

I go to poor richards because thats where the people who introduced me to steel fishing took me, and I can say they have been nothing but helpull.  I love it in there they have to hold some kind of record for the most inventory in the smallest place.  POOR RICHARDS ROCKS!
