Word on the street is that AR goes away next year in the DMA areas.

My question, why the laws in PA are written to remove the heavy horned bucks from the gene pool leaving the scrubs to mate?

Cause all of those young "scrubs" have the same genes as the older heavy horned deer. Plus does carry half of the antler genes as well. It is a very rare 3-5 year old buck that doesn't meet ARs.

It has been shown it is virtually impossible to alter the genetic makeup of a free ranging whitetail herd. If it were, the high fenced ranches in Texas would not have to cull "genetically inferior" bucks after decades of antler management within a fence.

any mention in the Texas data of the high fenced ranches altering antler growth with feed quality, minerals, vitamins, etc?

Bit more on the rut activity in my little piece of Penn's Woods.

Only interested in munching and everyone walked past the scrape.

Only seen one deer checking and marking the scrape and that was the half-rack.

I dunno, you be the judge.

Took today off work to hunt. Was snowing to beat the band and 25 degrees when I woke up and took the dog out at 430. Took better than an hour and 3 cups of coffee to convince myself not to climb back into my warm bed. Ended up seeing 5 doe, a 6pt, and another small buck.

Hit the same stand this afternoon after taking a break to warm up and get something to eat. Saw.....zero deer. Bummer. Bout a mile down the road when I left there were 2 trucks pulled over with a kamakizi doe and a bunch of shrapnel laying in the road.

Good luck to all of you trying to stick one, and good luck to all of us trying NOT to stick one with the vehicle.

Dang that sucks when that happens.

Didn't see much action today myself. Unfortunately this afternoon, somebody we've all come to know and love, had to be shopping at Walmart. 😑

Did see a couple of the little kyootys earlier in the day, munching apples in the winter wonder land.

Ughhhh..... the snow, somebody make it go away!! 😫

No deer hunting for my boys this evening with other stuff going on.

I took a few hours while they were in school and went huntin for those funny looking chickens they put out on the game lands.  Got a new lab, Rocky (a.k.a RockHead) for Christmas 2017 for the kids (even though he's become all my responsibility), and didn't hunt him nearly enough last year.  Had him out with my son a few weeks ago for the youth hunt, but this was his first action since then.  For being such a dumasz in the house, he's incredible on the ditch chickens.  Was nice to be out alone, and not have to let my son get all the shooting.  First bird I've killed in 8 years I believe.

Way to go Dave and Rocky!

I’ve been deer hunting (and not seeing any of these bucks running hither and yon in rut) instead of pheasant hunting the pointers because some drunk, who was also high (and currently is awaiting sentencing on 15, count them, 15 felony counts) rear ended me a week ago Monday and I cannot haul the mutts in the rental vehicle.

Of course, all my buddies are texting me how many birds they are killing and you guys are writing about all the bucks you are seeing, while I’m beating my head against a wall doing neither.

Pretty good last two days. Saw 6 bucks yesterday and 9 bucks today. Passed 3 legal ones up today. Friday morning I had a 10 point coming and I was ready as he walked into my 30 yard shooting lane. Problem is my loud bleating didn't get him to stop. He was on a mission apparently and paid me no attention. Dang it!

Still no real sign of estrus.... Nothing seen working the scrape and have not seen horns since the half-rack.

Sam you would be most welcome anytime.

No need to worry of getting lost, choot-em right off my front or back porch.

Not responsible for reactions from neighbors, should you need to field dress your deer in their front yard, though. πŸ™ˆ

Pretty wild for sure. Hunted acres of farm land the past years and felt lucky to see one or two deer in a week.

Quit hunting and move to a more populated area, the stupid things are everywhere.

Still fun to watch, they're so dam cute.

Welp..... finding going to a dentist slightly more exciting than the Falcons Saints game, I thought a I'd do a little hunting today.

Not to worry, shoot & release is legal on Sunday if younz get permission from the land owner so I ask my wife and she said "go away", so I took that as a yes.

Anyways, I think I got this rut thingy figured out. Ya see in the shot taken today, the deer again just milling around, munching and none paying no attention to the nearby scrape.

I'm thinking the larger of the three is the mommy and the other two are her twins and it looks like one of them has little nubbins.. ehhh, buttons errr button buck?

Heh hehhh, that's what my wife calls me.... her little nubbin. She's just so darned cute.

Anyways again, I'm thinking maybe the seasons may be slightly off and winter ended already cause this guy didn't see his shadow.

P.S. With all the Q-sacks in todays game, did BigBen get traded to the Saints?

Typically this is done to maximize the yield. Doesn't alter the genetics though.

Here are the pics of my 8 pt. from this morning.

Man, deer are tough critters. Shot was 20 yds but he was walking and I didn't want to try and stop him and alert him. Hit a little back. Watched him run out to 50 yds and then just stand there, hunched up. Arrow was barely hanging out of him on the exit side. The fletch was caught up inside. He started stumbling and then came back towards me 5 or so yards then bedded down. He was there, head up, for a good 10 min. or more. Tried to get up a couple times and then put his head down. Felt bad as I had no clear shot to follow up and it was pretty far anyways. Didn't want to try and get down and possibly spook him. He eventually went to one side and I knew he was expired. Ended up hitting one lung, liver and the stomach. Maybe 5 drops of blood total from where I hit him initially to where he bedded down. Even there, only a couple small puddles of blood. His entire chest cavity was filled with blood but with the higher entrance and the stomach/arrow plugging the exit, no blood. Tough, uphill drag but he is at the processor.
Pulled the card from the camera 20 yds behind this stand and man, Friday was a good day there too. A hot doe came through early and there was a parade of bucks, I think 8 to 10 different ones, a handful of legal ones and a couple shooters. Bigger bucks didn't come through until late morning/early afternoon.

Thanks to all the veterans for your service!

Here are just a few of the vids from just behind my stand where I shot my 8 pt. this morning.
Looks like Friday, 11/8 would have been a banner day for an all day sit.  I guess it was only a matter of time at this stand.
On my drag out saw almost 20 new/fresh scrapes with two of them as big as the hood on my truck.  Had to take the long way out on the drag due to the hill being too step that I walk in on.   No way I was getting a deer up it without a come a long.

Congrats Eyes nice buck.....tough watching that but it happens....my son hit a monster in the hind leg.....we gave him 8 hours and began tracking him 200 yards blood then nothing...followed out the trail he was on 100 more yards....we found him in a deep hole in a stream only thing visible was his rack...another toad with a 19.25 in spread...... I'm not doing to well....lol I've see n 2 legal bucks and both are 7pts....Yesterday at 9:45 I decided to try a shot at the bigger one.....unfortunately it  was 40 yards and I use my 30 yard red dot.....clean miss...I suck....I'm getting ready to hit it now.....I hope he's dumb and come back to the 5 fresh scrapes......sucks getting old but better than the other alternative.....
