And keep in mind when you view the map.  The yellow "walking trail" line does not accurately represent how to access the creek.  Although it gives the impression that you can access the creek near the junction of Elk/Little Elk, you cannot.  The streamside property in that area is owned by the neighboring property owner and is already posted, which is reflected on the map by the red property line.  After following the walking trail to the bottom of the gorge you must walk back through the woods to the powerline.  At that point, you can walk down to the stream and access.  You could also walk straight down the powerline and skip the walking path through the woods but that section of the powerline is extremely steep and full of thorn bushes/brush.  You can access the creek from the powerline to I90. There are posted signs on the west bank at the highwall hole (pictured below).

Just a heads up to anyone attempting to access this property.  It is extremely rugged, steep, and difficult to access.  If your not in very good physical shape, I would suggest taking a buddy or not attempting to fish until the weather improves.  Catching a fish is not worth serious injury or worse.  Good luck and enjoy.

This will greet you around 100 feet south of the powerline...This is why you must access the creek from the powerline.

Last picture....  This is a view of the steepest part of the gorge at the bottom of the powerline (its approx. a 1 mile walk from Beckman to get to the top of the powerline in the picture).  The walking trail/logging road is near the top on the right side of the picture.  You can choose to navigate through the brush down the powerline or take the logging road on your right and walk back through the woods to the powerline (you will come out on the powerline about where I took this picture from).

that all sounds really fun.
The fish commish guy said they are working on improving access and trails and that will be a continuing part of the project.
Hopefully it won't always be this difficult.

Yes.  They will be improving access, supposedly in the spring.  I believe the plan is to build an access road from Beckman to the back of the field along with a small parking area.  This would eliminate approx 3/4 mile of walking.  The gorge is the gorge so I'm not quite sure what could be done to improve access there.  Whatever they do, the walk to I90 is not an easy one.  This area is very different than fishing the legion hole.

One other thing to keep in mind...the access road to the cell tower was not part of the purchase.  No parking in this area.  The only parking area is at the corner of the field

There was a saw mill @1876 and mill pond just south, around the bend from the old covered bridge, It is documented in the 1876 Erie County Atlas and History of Erie County.

That doesnt really look too bad. Ofcourse when you walk into The GORGE and fish Devils or Whirlpool, it looks like a Sunday stroll through the park.

Yeah, now there is a great idea - all the FIT morons can go fish there and leave the rest of the stream access for people who have a handicap or mobility issues.

Walked it a hundred times in the 80's and 90's ....it's a hike.. especially with waders and gear.

I walked both the old logging road trail and along the I-90 fence trail ...the I-90 trail was narrow and steep ...the logging trail was wide and steep...both are tough walking out after fishing all day ...plus I was much younger .....25 years younger ! ....lol

It's all yours now ......hope it's still good ....it was my secret spot for many years !!!!

Capt. I fished it around the same time you did so I figure we are about in the same age bracket, I am going to try it again when I figure out where I  can and cannot go and how to get in there.

Go for it ......I haven't fished Elk in 5 years or more ....just not the same style I enjoy ...I still fish Lake Erie tribs now and then just not Elk . That was the best of the best it it's day ......fished it for over 15 years till the bottom fell out around 2005.

I'm 66 now with lots of good memories there.....lots of photos too . My son landed a 15lb. 34" male steelie there... biggest I've witnessed live.

Pen ....I've hiked that Devil's gorge many a day also ...spent many years fishing Niagara shore and boat drifting.....one of my favorite rivers !   Awesome place ! Everyone should try it at least once ...it's world class fishing .

Actually, he started in the 20's, and had taken control of Germany by " legal" means, by 1933.  By 1939, he was well on his way to his acme, oncoming insanity, and his eventual downfall, thank heavens and a generation of Allied and American men and women!

Havent posted in awhile...

Have fun fishing down there my friends...havent been down in that gorge in about 20 years.  Hiked in and out of there many times.  My fave was the hole at little Elk that looks off limits still...but better than nothing as others have said.  Wish i could join ya!

Not much i can do about it now though.  I'm in southern Arkansas and i just bought a house.  So....give me a year or 2 and i'll post up some duck hunting adventures from down here for all the OG duuds.  I see a duck boat in my future.

I'm also 6 hours from the Gulf - I hear red fish on the fly is da bom...they kinda look like carp to me tho

Man, I'd trade that for being 2 hours from steelhead fishing any time!  The duck hunting in Arkansas especially!

Red fish on any tackle is incredible.  Not as acrobatic as steelhead, in fact not acrobatic at all.  But man do they peel the drag and go on some fierce runs on light tackle.  My favorite fish hands down to eat!

The walk is not that bad. If your somewhat fit even at 60 yrs old you will have no issues taking the trail across the powerline and down through the woods. Its a good chunk of water to the I90 hole.

I can tell you that I would not want any 60 year old friend, relative, or acquaintance of mine making that walk into the gorge from Beckman if they are only "somewhat" fit.  Just saying....Its 4 miles from you car, to I90, and back to your car.  A lot of that is steep terrain

Agreed with NWCHROMER. Just did the walk a few days ago and it is BRUTAL. Can someone please clarify how you are supposed to get to the I-90 hole? When you get to the bottom of the gorge, you have a small section of water to fish downstream before hitting posted land again! The PFBC shows that they have an easement on the cliff side of the creek, but there is no way to walk down on that side as it is too deep (other side is posted). The amount of time and energy it took to walk down the gorge is not worth the few small runs to fish.

You would need to walk to the back of the field from Beckman.  Go to your right and follow the edge of the field until you get to route 90 then walk down through the gorge to the stream.  That is the only legal way to access and I'm estimating its a 2 mile walk to get to the stream at I90.
