Managed to round up a decent 8 point Tuesday afternoon at 4:40. My cousin also shot an 8 point 30 minutes before I did. Man the snow makes a world of difference. Monday afternoon, another hunter in our camp got an 8 point. So we went 3/5 which is pretty good. Been a while since we had 3 hanging.

First day was miserable. Sideways rain with a steady 15-20mpg wind and no snow cover. Seen two deer. I heard a shot at 7 then the next shot wasn't until 10:45. No one hunting. Didn't even feel like deer season the first two days. Every buck we shot was natural late day movement feeding.

Local news visited a rare hunters breakfast Monday morning. Hardly anyone there. It is a shame how the sport is dying in Pa.

Congrats.  Where is your camp located?

Rifle hunting is a tough game now days. Weather has been bad last 4-5 years , too much posted land , lower deer numbers, lower number of hunters, and waiting (if you can ) to see if that buck is legal or illegal gets old too. Lack of natural cover and 250 square inches of fluorescent orange make rifle season a challenge even with a gun that can shoot a hundred yards or more.

Re: Gun Season ... 2018 2018/12/02 17:56:29 (permalink)
Hunted Monday thru Thursday seen only one legal buck that I could not get a crack at, saw many does and quite a few little bucks focusing on a small strip of woods between two standing corn fields that was out of the wind. All the movement was natural, barely heard any shooting.

Yesterday decided to try a spot we have had excellent luck on 1st Saturday when the shooting starts, but the shooting never started by 11 so we decided to do some small drives before the rain started. I played dog 1st putting up 7 baldies to my dad who was able to harvest one. Next drive was two more doe up to my buddy who didn't have doe tags. He then played dog next in a valley that opens up across a power line that produces every year. My son and I were barely set up and the drive wasn't even started when the 1st deer, which we believed to be a doe came across about 200 yds out, a few minutes later my buddy gives a yell to let us know he is starting, he is just started when we hear deer flying at us, 2 doe get behind between us and a road we have no shot, then my friend driving starts yelling legal buck! Sure enough seconds later about 80 yds below us comes out a 14inch scrubby 8 pt. I swing up on the deer waiting for my son to shoot, he doesn't, the deer gets about 3/4 across the power line and I let one fly. The deer is hit hard and struggles to the other side of the clearing. I look over to my son and ask why he didn't shoot? Scope was fogged up( I haven't stopped hearing about this crappy scope since then). As I hand him my gun since the drive is still going I see a good sized buck bust out on to the line about 150 yds out. My son can't get the gun up on him quick enough. My dad set up near us let's one fly but doesn't connect.

Once the drive ended I walk down to where I shot to see a blood trail that left no doubt the deer was down, which it was right off the power line. Was out of the woods by 2. Heard maybe a dozen shots besides my party.

I will be near the standing corn the next few days filling a couple doe tags.

Here is the photo of my first Tuesday 8 point. I actually passed this same buck up on the last Saturday of archery. Didn't realize it was him until I walked up on him.

I too would have passed on him in archery but would have shot him in rifle season

Hopefully someone is out there today hunting away.  Beautiful day here in 2B for it.  Not too cold, not much, if any wind, gently snowing....

Saturday is looking good for a change. Good luck to all on the last day. I plan to sit basically hoping a coyote wanders by. I don't plan on shooting any does on this farm cause we got smacked by EHD. I do have another farm I will hunt doe in Flintlock season, though, and still have a 2B tag for the late archery season.

I believe semi auto rifles are not legal to hunt deer. Semi auto shotguns are but pretty sure they must be plugged to 3 shells.

Semi-automatic shotguns can be loaded to full capacity for deer hunting.  All shotguns must be plugged (3) for small game.

Currently, semi auto rifles are not legal for big game. Only furbearers and groundhogs. There is no magazine limit in those case. Semi auto shotguns are legal for big game statewide. There is no magazine limit.

The legislature transferred regulatory authority of semi auto rifles to the PGC at that time. From here, the PGC decides when and where. Right now, big game is not allowed, but that will probably change in time.

Well, got the snow report from my cousin.   3"-4" on the ground in his part of Warren Co. but it is sticking to the branches.  Maybe they'll get a little sun to melt that off and keep the forest floor white for good visibility.
Hoping to post a pic or two of some youngsters' success after tomorrow....

My rifle season in a nut shell.
No one shot in my group Monday- Friday. Seen deer about average numbers, nothing legal.

First Saturday group shot 5 doe and I shot this 8 point.

Monday-Saturday group including myself filled almost all our doe tags.

Final tally was 13 doe and 1 buck for the hunting season at dads.

Behind my house 1 buck 1 doe for the hunting season.

Congratulations to all that were successful, it seems many on here got it done. Great to read the stories. Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met
