Weather thread

I figured I would start a thread talking about the weather during the steelhead season

This week has unseasonably warm temps which will halt the run
Next week looks more promising with dropping temps and rain .

Have a productive season boys

no it won't
That's flat wrong ..period

Obviously you haven't fished enough years early in the season to see many unseasonably warm Sept and Oct's

Exactly!

To halt means, a run has started. What he meant to say, this warmer weather will further delay the first real run of fish.

This year is not off to the start the past several years have been. But if you know what you're doing its not an issue.

As captain previously mentioned in another forum, less light will trigger the fish to come in. Rain right now is more important. Next week looks more promising

I've seen that.  I think it was the fall of '07.  Ridiculously dry September.  Don't remember if it was stupid hot or more normal temps.  But the first weekend of October, fish were absolutely stacked in lower Elk, stuck by low water between the access and Cascade hole.  Total snag fest for most.

Genie, I know you're steadfast on the daylight thing, and that most will be in the system by mid October.

Hard to believe I've been doing this now for about 15 years, but for me, the biggest factor for triggering good numbers coming into the system is lake temp.  When it hits 67, that's when they'll start, as long as the cricks are at or below the same temp.  That used to happen around this time, but the last few years, that's been later.  In the past 3 or 4 years, I'd say the max number of fish ain't happening till about the first or second week of November now.

I'm sure those in the know have been catching 'em for a few weeks now.  There's are some social media trout gawds that've been catching them since the last week of August.  They'll be here eventually.

who cares whos first to catch ive done my share of early steel in my steelhead career  yes theres fish in the creeks  they are like people not all do everything at the same time... early steel is like the early birds who show up at dennys at 5am  while the majorty of the run shows up later to eat breakfast.....    now go get em n good luck

I have become comfortably numb

5MILEPete you sure do love to roll out the red carpet, and you NEVER sound bitter!  You should change your handle to ALLSMILESPETE
I for one am getting very excited for this season.  I know it's getting close because ive started to watch erie weather more than my own area daily!
Who cares HOW they come, who accurately predicts what or knows the most, or WHO gets one first!  The one-up-manship that some display is sheer pride and foolishness.
Me, I'm getting giddy about the chrome like a kid the night before Christmas!  Ain't no one gonna RAIN on my parade....pun INTENDED!

"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."

Re: Weather thread 2018/09/20 17:07:29 (permalink)
I have always wondered what matters most as it relates to triggering a run . . . stream flow or water temps? When I was at Behrend in the Mid-80s and the Coho run still existed, the 1st two weeks in October were the 'honey weekends' on lower Walnut and the 'East Side' streams, into November all the way up to the Millcreek Mall (how times have changed--much of this water is no longer open), seemingly regardless of whether it was unseasonably warm or cold, or stream flow.

While I haven't been up in several years, it seems that unless there is rain, the Tribs have yet to see any meaningful run by early October now.

Are Steelhead more dependent on water temps to trigger the run?

Or, is it more water levels and we've just had a hard time generating enough flow to get them moving?

You’re about to get a million different replies. My experience is cooler weather PAIRED with increased flow allows for the best chance for fish to move throughout the creeks.

What's this  Approval Pending?

Anyway......I just posted the link to show the muperes that unless those steelhead got legs, like those catfish in Florida, they aren't getting past Uncle John's.  And to show the link to the new webcams.  There's four now.    Might take a ride to the Circus tomorrow, and see if the clowns have arrived.  I'll let y'all know.  If I get my post approved. :-)

sunlight hours, the sun is an absolute killer to them fish, why do you think in the hot summer months they are out in the trenches... or trout run they are piled up the in shadows and follow the shady spots until the sun rises too high and they move back out.

They are genetically fearful of overhead predators if the sun is shining on them with no coverage they don’t feel safe. The sun is just too far up the hemisphere this time of year. It also hurts their eyes. They are in deep water 6 months out of the year imagine it like laying around a dim room for 6 months and then turning a light switch on. It’s going to take awhile to ease into and it and get used to it.
