high point

we're planning on heading to high point next week - any reports?  I would think that the water level must be very high with all the rain we've had.

thanks

The Somerset County Emergency Management Agency advises that due to conditions at the High Point Lake Lake Dam in Addison Township, the public should avoid the area downstream of the dam in the low-lying areas along Glade Run. McClintock Run and the Casselman River through portions of Addison and Lower Turkeyfoot Townships. A press release will coming from the Pennsylvania Fish And Boat Commission on September 4, 2018. Stay tuned for further information.

Probably another lake that will end up like Somerset or Donegal.

Wouldn't worry about pickerel in the river, I'm sure they're already there, they really aren't a river fish.

Well, It seems theres only going to be a gradual draw down to repair the dam, hopefully thats all thats needed.

Its going to be just like Kahle Lake, which is up here on Venango/Clarion County line. Originally drawn down 6 feet. Anglers complained enough to the PFBC and local elected officials. There has been two public meetings. PFBC says they have no money to fix it, but raised the water level up, so there is only a 3 foot drawdown.

Kahle has no houses below the dam, so its a super low priority. My guess it will never get fixed.

Atleast it's not a structural problem, it's a malfunctioning intake valve or something so hopefully it can be a cheaper fix

There are pics floating around on facebook.  It's down, probably 2 feet or so right now from what I have read.  I haven't seen anything about guys fishing it or the boat launch situation.

They still plan to drop it down 15 feet for repairs.  Most of the lake will be dry I believe.

Yesterday WJAC said water level was down 3 to 5 feet.  They had a picture showing a dock was completely out of the water.   It was down around 10 to 15 feet around 10 years ago and I doubt it caused much long term troubles.   Sounds like all they need to do is let enough water out so they can redo the timbers inside the secondary outflow.  They probably never bothered to change the original timbers since the 1960's

Tv station said yesterday that High Point would be held at current level (4 feet draw down) until they replace the boards that broke in the secondary overflow.  Should take a few weeks.

    Weeds good, clay/mud bad.

Glad to hear they are gonna be able to repair it without destroying the place or having a long term closure.

Last week when I was up was on a workday.  There were no boats out, just three kayaks.   I believe the north launch drops off faster but do not know if you can get a boat in or not.  The first couple feet beyond the launch appeared to be mostly rocky but I'm sure there is soft mud somewhere beyond.  I just don't know how far out it is.

Re: high point 2018/10/16 20:30:04 (permalink)
finally getting around to posting about out trip to high point on Oct 10.  went to the south ramp - water way too low to get boat in - low by at least 3 ft vertical .  went to north ramp - water very low but we decided to drag the boat off the trailer with practically no flotation.  a tough job but made it.  luckily the weather was not bad but had to get into the water up to my package.

another boat had the same issues and he said the level is higher than when he was here two weeks ago - his entire SUV was in the lake and he still got only minor flotation.  another boater just gave up and drove away.

fishing was not good at all.  we threw crawlers and minnows hoping to get some bass, perch and crappies - zero crappies and two barely legal perch - one 14.5 inch largemouth and a few other dinks.  no pike/pickerel.  the other boat on the lake, two guys throwing lures across the top of weeds - appeared to be catching a few bass but nothing big that we saw.

was surprised at the number and size of bluegills we got.  kept enough for dinner for 4 - only needed 6 gills - this is quite different than historically for us - we would catch dink gills and very few large ones - just opposite now.

with the level down so much, it was hard to find where the weeds ended - then, of course, the wind wouldn't let us be practically all day.  it blew us down to the dam then we struggled to get back.  not the typical wind direction.

will not be back till next spring - hope there's some improvement.
