Always use mine for stockies. I use an 8' Ultra light rod with the smallest floats I have.

I've used mine a few times on the bigger streams like the clarion river, redbank and Tionesta Creek.  Pretty much use the same rig w a 2 to 4 gram float.  I did try the reel on an old noodle rod and it worked fine also.  Basically a big water rig in my opinion.

I fish a St.Croix 9 ft lite power with my pin. On buffalo cow, some on glad, and cherry from time to time it's really no challenge a 3 wt 7 ft is alot more fun. But for steel the only thing I'll touch is my pin.

To elaborate a little on my previous post, I use my pin throughout central PA. What's nice about it on is I also carry my spinning reel and can throw it on any time I want. But I find myself never putting it on. I just love using the pin. I've been using it for about six years now and it still has that new car smell. What you need to remember is that you can use the pin for any kind of fish. It's just another technique that you can add to you arsenal. I have one pin and use it on a multitude of rods. The smallest being the 8' ultralight. I've use it on a 13' float rod. I use it on my 10.6 noodle rod. I've even let my kid use it on his 9' noodle rod. I've tried it a couple times on some of my fly rods (not the best option) It works great on all the other rods though. Rod length kind of determines length of drift. So on small streams, I use a shorter rod and shorten my drifts.

Basically the same as steelhead fishing.  The size and flow as well as the clarity of the water.  More or less how much weight you need to hold your offering down to the fish to effectively fish.
