Lake Trout fishing out of North East in spring.

Laker fishing out of North East in spring is on my to do list. I have never caught a Lake Trout and only targeted them once in Simpco with no luck. I have no clue as to method of fishing for them any generic clues would be appreciated.

Fish mainly in 60-140 FOW up until the water hits a uniform 50-52°, at which point the spring fishing is over. Concentrate on the bottom 1-10’ but don’t be afraid to drag some baits higher in the water column either. Run spoons at any speed, Dodgers at 1.6-2.4mph, flashers at 2.2-2.8mph, and cowbells at 1.4-1.8mph. Green, chartreuse, yellow, white, and silver are never bad colors. Good luck!

What is your advice for fishing the Mountain?  The same? Also pound test for trolling and leader line?  Thanks.

That info is for the mountain, I almost always fish the northern part of it in that depth range. I use straight 25lb mono on my downrigger rods and 20lb fluoro leaders on my Dipsy and planer board rods. Generally put baits 5-15’ behind the Downrigger ball for the most success.

Anyone been out for lake trout yet this spring?
Having any success? Or have a down temperature off the lake?

Was out two Saturdays ago and this past Sunday. 5 for 7 the first day and 5 for 5 the second day, about 5 hour sessions each time. I’ve been getting everything in 80-120 FOW so far. Surface temps have ranged from 41-45° out deep and the bottom is likely a degree or two colder than up top right now, no probe on my boat.

Not that I’ve found. Lake Trout have a pneumatic duct that connects their swim bladder to the gut, so they can easily “burp” air in order to alleviate pressure and rapidly rise in depth. Part of what makes them such successful deep water predators! I’ve fished for them as deep as 220’ down on Lake Superior and they’ve all gone back fine. Now, Summer Lakers with 75-80° surface temps, those can be a PITA to revive at times considering they’re a fish that loves 39-45°.

Anyone going out this weekend? We’ll be searching for Lakers for 2-3 days as long as the waves cooperate. Have a feeling this is going to be the last solid weekend for Spring LTs, might have to do some exploring out deeper than usual.

No argument there haha, best eating fish in PA! I might try running some plugs in 15-30 FOW for one or two dinner Eyes if the Lake Trout bite is off, or we get our fair share early on, but we’ll see. I don’t want to deal with going to a restaurant for dinner on a holiday weekend and some fresh fillets on the grill sounds a lot more appealing.

Anyone have recent down temps around the Mountain? Looks like the surface water is in the low 50’s already, I’m just hoping it’s still in the 40’s down over the mud.
