I would take a pic of a nice brown every time because they’re rare round these parts. Pic???

The DEC released an article about changes to their Erie Steelhead program for 2018 and one of those changes was to discontinue all Brown Trout stocking. Since Dunkirk harbor is no longer a WWD, there's not really any established fishery for them anymore. Plus, Browns are few and far between even in likely spots. Can't say I blame them, though. Instead of stocking 10,000 Browns and only having a small handful return, stock that many more Steelhead that you know will come back in greater numbers. Apparently they only had Browns turn up in one of their nets while surveying the past couple years, and they place a few dozen if I'm not mistaken.

Yes out of all the hours spent on Erie tribs I’ve ever only caught two browns . They just simply do not have high return rates. I can understand the perspective being fed here.

Different, but not better in my experience. Steelhead if you want 100' runs and fancy acrobatics, Browns if you want bulldogging and diving, plus the bigguns just sit on the bottom and almost snap your rod before they decide to move.

They use to say about a 10% average return rate is all you get from stocked tributary Steelhead Trout 3-4 years later. Not sure if Browns are less percentage on their returns or their stocking numbers are just too low to begin with to show a good return ? 10,000 is not a lot stocked if only 1,000 might return.

Use to be a lot of big Walleyes caught around Dunkirk years ago....actually was kept low key too ! Don't know about now days.

Yes, I'd say they need to put more in to begin with if they ever want higher returns. But for now I support their move to all Steelies and domestics. Just in theory, I'd love to see PA split their one million smolts in half one year and do 500k Steelhead & 500k Browns just to see how much that'd change things. But I'm sure that'll never happen.

Couldn't tell yah about the walleye, but I did Boat a trio of 21-24 pounders this year in that area if you catch my drift :).

I won't talk what I can't back 👌. They all swim again, but I did try some smoked Laker in the UP this summer and it was infinitely better than smoked Steelhead! Someday I'll figure out how to post pictures here, but here's a link to two of 'em, 23 and 24, have to hug them at this size!
