The Rut

Any one see any bucks chasing.  I saw a lot of rubs but no scrapes or any bucks chasing yet here in Somerset County.   Next week should be good.  Will hunt it hard next week.   Lots of bucks on camera but all are nocturnal.

The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.

Panfisher here in my little piece of NW Penn's Woods Cm not seeing much of anything saying the rut is in full swing.

Pictures of different bucks passing through but no swollen necks or dark stained tarsal glands as of latest pics.

Two rubs and two scrapes appeared untouched as of noon today. Makes me wonder if a more dominate buck may be gracing my hunting grounds with his presence.

Had heavy rains with thunder bumpers pass through last night, will be interesting to recheck the scrapes and the "Beaver Moon" blooms tomorrow night so I would venture to say the rut is on it's way. Stupid full moon gonna keep em nocturnal for a while, me thinks.

Saw 1 doe being lightly chased last Saturday, but other than that the rut seems nonexistent in my area at the moment.

At 10:30 today a smallish 8 pt chased a doe right by me and neither ever stopped. I was talking on the cellphone to my son and stupidly kept talking. I glanced in direction they came from and there is an 18" buck 20 yards out coming on same chase. I didn't have enough time to get my thoughts straight let alone my crossbow. It was over quickly, and reminded me of why my brother always turned off his phone when hunting.

Off all week,Saw multiple bucks cruising Monday and Tuesday in 2D. Couple were older bucks, no shots. Didnt hunt in the rain Wednesday, but Thursday saw chasing and bucks crusing all day long, including a large 10 pt. Sat in a tree all day long Friday, only seen one small buck. Today it was on again between my buddy and I, we saw 13 bucks between us and I was only hunting till 930 when a 16 inch 8 pt made mistake of pushing a doe by me at 15 yds.

Not an archery hunter, but saw 8 different bucks chasing does today while searching for turkeys today in SW Washington County. This morning was absolutely crazy with deer activity.

My last three sits from my 3 best stands come up empty on any deer. Did pass on a nice little 8 point last week at 17 yards. He needed one more year. Seeing absolutely no rut activity here. Went spotting a couple nights this week and there were no buck harassing the does.

Caught this guy on my trail cam.   Neck is swollen but his chest is swollen too.   Is this normal?    Hunted for him all day today but all I saw was a little button buck.

Things in my area have stopped completely. Have not seen a deer on my property or in the neighbor’s fields since 11/3. Hunted predawn to after dark yesterday and saw one nuthatch.

Have not seen a deer to or from work since 11/3 and I drive past several newly harvested soy bean fields not long after dark.

I had two doe in the yard yesterday. But I took a 4 mile, round trip, on the trail yesterday and never saw one deer. That's completely unusual. Did flush a grouse, dam bird, and one turkey. Almost forgot probably close to 2 dozen ringnecks, the ones who somehow find their way back to the pen after being released.

Bucks have really been chasing the last 3 days.  2 bucks chasing does today.   Another buck was tailing a doe with 2 fawns.  Saw 7 bucks in the last 3 days.   That is good for the area I was hunting.   Not a lot of deer in that neck of the woods.

Wind chill yesterday was in the single digits  and this morning was only 11 degrees.  Froze both days.

Wish I could hunt next week.   Should be prime.

What rut? Without a doubt the least action in years. I've hunted 13 days in a row morning and evening sits. 17 total deer two legal bucks in Pa. Ohio wasn't much better but a did kill and 8pts. On Thursday my son saw his first hot doe being chased and she brought his buck and two others in less than an hour. I hunted last night, nothing but weather conditions where nasty. This morning seemed perfect but I had changing winds that switched 3 different directions this morning, I did see a doe and a fawn at 7:30,then at 9:40 I really got excited,a lone big tank walked by at 25 yards. I waited till 11:15 no boyfriend............... to be continued.

Lots of action in 2D. 13 yr old son was off school yesterday, we chose a stand location out of the wind near a prime bedding. Constant action from right after 1st light when a doe came flying through at about 60 yds. Couple minutes later a decent 8 pt followed her path, then a spike and a busted rack buck followed. Maybe 15 minutes later we see a couple doe off to our left feed through in front of us, he lays off hoping for one of those bucks to come back through but nothing. Round 815 I catch movement behind us about 40 yds away its a large 8pt moving very quickly, grunts and snort wheezes do nothing to slow him down, he just keeps cruising. At about 840 we hear chasing coming our way its a single doe with a 6pt, 7 pt and 5 pt without brow tines hot in her. They are pushing her all around us but not in any shooting lanes, this goes on for about a half hour when the 5pt finally comes into a lane at 22 yds. My son fires and connects right behind the shoulder. Buck puts his head down and runs maybe 30 yds and begins to stagger, we watch him fall waited a little to make sure he was down and walk up to him at about 930 and he was down for the count. 7 bucks seen one harvested in a short morning hunt.
