Whats with the trend of coyote hunts anyway? I seems like every sportsmans group is having them. Is there a good reason to have them? Just curious....

It's a good way to do a bit of hunting during the off season. A lot of it is done with dogs, some by calling, just a bit by trapping. About 80% are taken by running hounds and intercepting the yotes. Just a good way to play away the winter and save a few prey critters in the process.

last week was the first time i have ever heard of someone using dogs to hunt coyote... from my understanding the dog chases the coyote and you gota somehow get infront of them. am i correct in saying this? if soo it sounds hard

They ran one here from 8:30 in the morning till 4:30 in the afternoon.  Jumped it in Sandy lake and Killed it in Harrisville.

The dogs have radio collars that you can ride around the block with an antenna and track the dogs. What they do hear is ride around till you cut a fresh track then turn the dogs loose. The group that hunts around here has quite a crew that gets together. 6-8 trucks, 3-4 dogs, couple atvs, and a dozen men. They got two big yotes right behind my house last year. One hunt I saw advertised had a $6000 purse.
I like to see them hunted. Without the organized hunts there would be one hell of a lot of yotes around here.

They do it here like Bings says--guys have radios and keep in touch with the dogs and each other and try to anticipate where the yote will cross a road or field and intercept him. they killed one behind my house this winter they started about 10 miles away.

yea, it is a pretty slick operation. I like to see them hunted as well. I only hope that they keep up the good will with landowners.  A friend came out of his house a few weeks ago to find a guy with a shotgun 25 yards from his house standing on the road with a shotgun.  Fortunatley my friend likes to see them hunted as well, but a situation like that could have turned bad easily.  Any time you are using dogs they are eventually going to end up on property where they shouldn't be.

They were good enough here to stop and ask us to keep our dogs in for a little while as they had a coyote coming through with the dogs hot on his tail. Could be a little intimidating to non hunters. Hope they keep up the good relationships with the landowners.
