FYI the mouth of elk has moved...

Launched there 6/28/17 in evening and the mouth was all jammed up with logs.
The water was flowing over peninsula into the lake close to where "The Ole Mouth " I always hear about was.We turned around put boat back on trailer and went to Walnut.
There was a empty trailer in parking lot that was gone at midnight when I went back there out of curiosity.
And while I am typing about it I know its been said before by others but can we take some of the money being spent on Walnut access and improve Elk access its like two different worlds.
Fishing was slow tonight for us just a strange night all around including watching a rod FLY overboard but that's a whole different story.
Be safe out there everyone...WCW

It's a shame how little attention elks launch gets, it's my favorite spot to run out of, location wise. last year it was all silted over. This year it's jumbled up with logs... If they ever get around to it, I hope they pull that big log sitting in the channel about 20 yards down from the launch too!

Took em forever to cut up the cluster down below, the logs your talking about will sit there collecting bobbers until the creek moves them.
They need to improve that lower ramp...just a shame.
Meanwhile at Walnut they are spending too much in my opinion.

I was amazed at how far walnut has come along when I was up a couple weeks ago. Think of it this way, they had to dump all that money in there so that the fair weather steelheaders had somewhere to set up their 6 catfish rods lined out with 2/0 hooks and 30lb test 🤣

Steelhead run is canceled this year, fellas, had a dream where the president elect of the steelhead told me there is a temporary ban from them running the creeks this year, and that the log at the mouth is actually them building a wall to keep the lampreys out.

But look at it this way, there will be a surplus of blue powerbait and weighted trebles

Well took a walk down there today...there was a empty boat trailor in lot but mouth is as shallow as 1 foot on creek side all the way across only about 8 ft wide.
Its a start...at least the precious steelies can get in creek.
So glad they put signs up on walking trail I would have gotten lost...WCW

Doesn't look any worse that the mouth of Trout Run, and the chromers have no problem piling into there! Shaping up for a good fall season. Already cool in early August, moderate amounts of rain, and water temps (both in the streams and lake) aren't overly warm.

Great. Will be mup first thing in the morning with the go pro, 5  friends, and a fly box full of mop flies. As per tradition, stop at the Dubois sheetz for a schmuffin, hashbrowns, and coffee, and stop at the Edinboro I79 rest stop to do my business and don my waders. Maybe bring my post digger to the mouth of Elk, and do some excavating.

Nu-bee here so let me get this straight. Poo your saying green-eggz in a pink thong not, pink-eggz in a green thong?

John I stopped every night, headed east, at Dubois Sheetz. Had to satisfy my fix for hotdog with coleslaw and kraut (3) washed down with a giant rootbeer. Never missed a bid-niz stop at the 245 rest-a-rea in all those years.

Besides those yummy dogs I'd have to say Dubois sure had some ugly fuel attendants...10-4?

Saw someone caught a nice Brown in Walnut this weekend, looks like the run has officially started! There should be a million fish in there by this Friday, maybe I'll drive my boat up the mouth and troll circles in the now-dredged stop sign hole until I snag something with a size 8/0 treble hook from a big stickbait.

Shame about Elk truly.  Fished there and did well probably 2 or 3 years ago.   Stopped last year and even parking at the red building you had to find a way around to even get down near the mouth.  And now if that recent picture is the "mouth" proper it's gonna be another crap show there...

Stopped at Elk yesterday and checked out the new mouth. Doesn't really look any smaller/tighter than the old one, at least to me. Don't think it's going to alter this year's run in any way, considering Steelhead still manage to pile into Trout Run with the tiny trickle of water of a mouth that it has.

Your right it doesn't take much water for Steelhead to move up into but they do need enough to migrate farther . You remember when all the Steelhead were basically stacked by the hundreds in the access area years ago for weeks due to low water conditions ? I'll bet there wasn't a dozen Trout above Rt. 5 on up, but below there were hundreds swimming around. First big rain and they were all scattered.

Right where it flows into the lake I'd say 6-7' wide and about a foot deep. Widens pretty quickly after that though and maxes out around 8-9' wide and 2-3' deep in the narrow section where there's actually water flow (versus the swampy mudhole).
