redington - sage

I'm out looking for a new 5 wght rod and was looking around when a salesman told me that Sage bought Redinton and the Redingtons use the same blanks as the Sages at a fraction of the price.  The Regington has the same gold color and feels pretty good in the store but I know that doesn't really predict how they will fish.  Has anyone else heard this or was the salesguy just blowin smoke up my rear?

I'm not so sure about that, either.

No, not same blanks, but all one big happy family. My vote would be Redington CPS if money is an issue. Sage Z-Axis if it is not.

Sage did buy Redington, but they are not the same blanks. Even in the Sage lineup, they are not the same blanks throughout. Remember when Mercedes owned Chrysler? They were owned by the same group, and shared some technologies, but definitely not the same vehicles. Where were you shopping out of curiosity? Redington does make great rods for the money, but a mid end Sage is a lot different than a mid end Redington. That said, they are both great rods, and it all depends on how you want it to perform.

It was a salesmen at Sportmens Warehouse that told me that Sage and Redington was virtually equal.  I really want to test-cast some of these Rods I'm looking at.  Just shaking them around in the store isn't really telling me much.

A family member of mine has an 8wt. Redington.  Very light rod, and casts well (at least for me)  For the money, it is a very nice rod.  Is it just like a Sage.  In a word: No.

I am sure there are big differences between Sage and Redington that we can't always see.  But, some that we can...  hardware, grade of cork in the handle, etc.  Even rod tubes and socks vary from rod to rod.

I think of rods the way some people think of cars....you certainly pay for the options.

I own the Redington CPS 8wt rod.  I bought it online from FishUSA.  I like it alot.
It won the 2007 Reader's Choice Award for Fly Rod & Reel magazine.
