A quick trip

I quietly snuck into Pulaski Sunday afternoon for a trip down the Oswego with Kevin Davis and Catch the Drift on Monday. After a burger at the Altmar Hotel I settled in for the night at a local airbnb in anticipation of a day on the river. As you all know this season has been a grind and hopes of a good day were heavy on my mind.

Met the captain at the kiddie pool near Linear park at 6:45 A.M. and began our trip up river to the dam. KD had doubts we could make our way up river because the power company had dropped the water levels to a little over 8000 cfs. He slowly coaxed the drift boat along until we dropped anchor at the base of the dam. I was ready on this crisp cold morning air but would the fish cooperate. It didn't take long for an answer. First cast/drift, fish on. Bad luck struck as the first steelhead won his freedom when the leader parted due to rock rash. Second cast/drift, fish on. A beautiful walleye comes to net after a short battle. His last!

A lull before moving then the grind begins. A swing and a miss. A short time later after moving and resetting to catch a different drift we returned to the spot of the miss. A few casts and I stick a fish on the soft inside seam of a riffle. After a few runs into the heavy water the fish finally moves up river. A beautiful 12+ lb hen is brought to net, the biggest of the day. The fish gods smiled upon me on this one, they would again smile on a beautiful colored up male later in the day.

A number of stops, countless drifts, hookups, misses, resulted in at least twelve fish in the net.

Some gorgeous steelhead, browns and a domestic rainbow made the day on the Oz a memorable one.

Pictures to follow.

Eggs sacs, beads and jigs all produced fish.

Jack, by the time I got into Pulaski few were still fishing.  I saw perhaps a half dozen cars in DSR, nothing in Sportsmen.  I did not go by 2A, Pineville or venture in to Trestle lot.  Same for Altmar.  Town pool was dead.

As for the day I fished I only saw 2 people fishing from the wall, one other drift boat in the lower river behind the motels.
