'16-'17 Hardwater

Definitely jumping the gun, but there's a chill in the air and I've got the itch to hit the hardwater soon after a lousy ice season last year. Temps for the next 2 weeks look to be in our favor. Here's to hoping the water cools down, the wind stays down, and the hardwater starts forming.

I'm with you Crappie_Slayer..... it's getting boring sitting in trees.   I looked at the long range forecast provided by the NWS but after two minutes of their jargon I gave up.  The report they had this week contradicts the report they issued last week for the same time period, at the end of this month.  If anybody needs me; I'll be in my tree.

Quick update; Shenango reporting water temp 44 degrees. And after seeing a selfie posted by the Capt; who had just caught a beauty of Striper while wading in that water, I would venture to say the look on his face confirms the water temp. lol

Where do you guys get your ice fishing equipment? I've been searching for 3 years, running myself simple and I still haven't found everything I need or want.

Depends on what your looking for jigs. I ordered most of my stuff online. Fishusa has a good selection I might add.

Jigs, I'll second what outasync said. Fish USA has a nice selection for ordering online. Also I buy quite a bit of small stuff from the smaller local bait shops. As far as getting everything you need or "want", good luck with that. Seems like any store I walk into that sells ice fishing gear has something I need and/or want. 😉

Old dog: I've been meaning to check that area out. It may have some decent archery hunting too. Everything behind our house is posted so something close that's accessible would be great!

I may have to explore in the spring. By the looks of it there will be hard water soon and then my woods wandering days will be limited lol doubt I'll even be out deer hunting again this year. Freezers full!

Driving into conneaut lake today there was some ice forming in the docks behind Nye's. Was bored this weekend and I've got the itch to get on the ice so bad I whipped up a few jaw jacker style rigs. Can't wait to give them a try.

Dang, I'd say somebody has been very busy the last couple days.  Nice looking work and very cool.

Say, if your looking for someone to "test drive" a few of those puppies I know someone who would be willing to give them a 'extended' trial.......  No charge!

Plus, 14 days til Christmas........  hello?

    Very nice Crappie_Slayer, very nice.

Thanks for the compliments BTDT. What can I say, boredom definitely gets the best of me sometimes and I'm a tinkerer. If they work worth a **** I'll be making some more. Maybe we'll meet up on pymy this winter and I'll let you take one for that "extended test drive". Till then, think cold thoughts :)

I'll bring the jerky and snack sticks.lol I'm more the ready, Moraine and Shenango should be first on the list. If your a jigger plenty of 7-7.5 gills at Moraine, not giants but ok the numbers are ridiculous. Shenango will give tons of decent crappie it's up to you what you consider a keeper. I keep at 10" but a lot of people don't. Plenty of fat black crappie 8"- 14" with way more on the low end of the bar. The really big one also seem to be those sloped nose white crappie. There's also a lot of action at both places. I hope for early ice in January and a long 12 weeks of fishing.

I doubt it most lakes are capped, the warm up will melt some snow on the ice and actually make better ice. It's not going to come fast but mid January we'll be on the ice. Extended forecast shows many nighttime temps below freezing.

There's 3-3.5" of ice on Moraine. Tip-up gang limiting out on basses. If you eat bass that's the place to go.lol

Took the wife to therapy in Hermitage yesterday, drove up to Golden Run, capped over as far as I can see, (eyesight isnt what it used to be), snow covered, no one fishing. Did not walk down to the ice to check the thickness. Hope Saturdays rain nocks some snow off before temps drop again.

Rode out to pymy after an unsuccessful pheasant hunt this morning. Few huts out of Manning and a few out of Tuttle pt. Didn't have my stuff to check the thickness, but I'll most likely be giving it a shot tomorrow

Was told pymy was still capped, but not sure what kind of condition the ice was in. I'm sure the 8" or so of snow that dumped down isn't gonna help. Guess a warm weekend will be helpful to melt some of the snow down. Looks like some colder temps on the way next week

That snow bad news for the ice.  Lake Arthur had decent ice 4- 5" before Christmas but its to shaky for me now. Idiots are going out on 2-3 " of ice that been through 60 degree weather, rain and high winds. I'm to big and old to join the polar bear club. Hopefully will get solid ice by mid January.

Pretty quiet on here. Luckily the worst of the snow missed Crawford county and the temps have been lower than expected at night. Will be heading over to pymy tomorrow to have a look and hopefully get out for the first time. One more warm up middle of next week, then hopefully the deep freeze sets in for a while.

Me..... me!!! I wanna go, I wanna go fishin too!!! That is "IF" I get over this 'whatever it is people has been catching'. Just my luck, I can go out for days and not catch a fish but go to Walmart for an hour and, catch a boat load of cold-n-flu. Stupid fish.
