Re: just mussing-- 2016/09/13 20:48:24 (permalink)
Based on what I seen ( river )Sunday , & Monday :
Sunday was dead , nothing spotted from the estuary to the ballpark in which I observed quite a few fishers , er what ever you call jerkers .
Hatchery had zero .
Monday some whalers were hooking fish off the rt 3 bridge and trailer hole in estuary , that's as far as I looked yesterday so yes maybe that blow Sunday pushed some in that were staging in 80 fow sat when we were out .

Lake report :
Sat we marked quite a few fish between 80 & 120 fow and it was near combat boats but tolerable to fish .
Sunday was big blow so we just scouted the river .
Monday the fish we marked were gone from previous location and either scattered deep 120 + fow and moved way north of the SR, like sandy pond . It was obvious due to boat traffic and marks we seen.
Today we went north to sandy pond and again they were gone and moved back towards the SR in 100 fow . They were very sporadic though on the fish finder .
The only real concentrated fish we seen were on sat , maybe a group pushed into river and the rest just scattered until they re group .

Any rate we didn't see gang loads of fish or boat loads of salmon , yes quite a few were caught ( snagged ) out there while trolling but not what I would have expected.
Now that information Uglyfish posted from the dec:
If they are saying an estimated 6 million from survival and natural reproduction is occuring , they need to have their head examined !! I call B.S. !!!
Anyone I know out there on the lake is disgusted at the fishery right now and quite a few are pulling up stakes altogether .

That's all I got ,
Oh I forgot , a snagger will always get his share when they , no matter how many of few come into the river .
Last I knew lake charters were not $1,000 but just might be if there are fewer fish and customers , then again a guy from Ohio has money to burn and 1/0 hooks to hook em'

Hey, to you new guys-
Old timers have heard this one before--

Years back in mid Summer-before computers in every house- read a weekly regional  fishing magazine .
A weekly report from a upriver SR  fishing establishment said there were so many Atlantics in the river that 'even the kids are catching them'.
Immediately took a couple of days vac time -reserved a room for a couple of nights- and shot up to the river.
Went right to that same store,  and asked for a real time report on the Atlantic fishing.
They said it was very slow and very few had been reported seen or caught.
They had no idea about the report I had read---they said.

Cancelled the room and drove straight back to Connecticut.
A hard lesson learned.
Bovine field splatter - otherwise known as fishing for dollar$.

Aint so bad anymore- however- be cautious before changing any plans about rushing to the River.

Gotta add the year a friend and I fished way low for 3 mornings and 2 evenings -- mid river mid days-all trying to find a decent pod as fishing was tough all over.
It was late Sept.
Upon our return home that same weekly fishing magazine 'quoted' a way downriver place as having "Fantastic' fishing two of the days we left to find some decent fishing.
Its gotten much better over time -butttt------------------
Can understand someone  feeding the family on a fishing busine$$ making the most of things butttt----
Don't change your plans unless FISHERMEN actually on the river  start positive reports.

I remember the days of the Portly Angler, DSR and a host of others with their daily recorded reports of how great the fishing was only to make the ride and find out the contrary.  The internet is a valuable tool but not all that glitters is gold.  Like others I've had more swings and misses than crush fests but time spent on the river was worth it regardless of outcome.

Remember , the SR is only 1 trib along the Great Lake .
How many get snagged out on the lake itself ? Maybe 1-2,000 ?

I know a pretty small lake in the ADK's that gets 17,000 tiger Muskie per year in the spring . If you catch 1 that survives , it's quite an accomplishment

Another way to look at it is ,
The hatchery gets their quota from handling 5-800 kings.
Remember the year they closed the LFZ

Back when they stocks 5. Million kings . A guy who ran a station down at port Ontario had his best day ever of cleaning around 300 fish . His average was 75-100 on a weekend outside of that .

From the 2015 report on the DEC website.  This is after the fish have run the gauntlet, and a lot of them are stuck in the petting zone, and a lot stay in the brook and ladder.  But I think your numbers "off the cuff" are way off.  And 2015 was a bad year, too, remember, likely much higher numbers in better years.  The year the LFZ got closed, they had to go elsewhere for egg wagons because they were pretty much totally harvested coming up river.

"Returns of Pacific salmon in the fall included 1,904 Chinook salmon (791 females) and 6,457 coho salmon. Biological data were collected at the hatchery from 907 Chinook salmon and 284 coho salmon. The egg totals were 3.7 million Chinook salmon from 746 females and 2.4 million coho salmon from 842 females (Nelson 2015b)."

Remember this is fish that swam into pens in the hatchery, not fish in the river.

Based on the Charter Boat survey, here are some other Numbers:
Table A9a. Chinook salmon harvest and catch data collected April 15 – September 30, 1985-2015.

Seasonal (5½ month) estimates of harvest and catch for all fishing boats:

Harvest        53,837; 39,439; 53,336; 35,520;  54,964;  31,676; 46,333; 55,137; 38,292; 47,935; 34,951
Catch            75,116; 59,606; 84,842; 55,776; 101,427; 61,960; 97,899; 88,851; 62,570;76,626; 58,870

Last year didn't hit much till October - might wait another couple of weeks- going nuts
By now generally had several under my belt from mid August on.
Part time residence was nice.

Deer and Turkey started last week with the bow but the temps were still in daytime 80s.
Perhaps this week----

Number for the river?  Source of data?  My **** came from the Official Report, (http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lorpt15.pdf) but that was for the lake .  But I think it is safe to say that 100,000 kings are caught or harvested lake wide, conservatively.  And I could still be way low, as the numbers I'm looking at are just DEC, no OMNR data.

Nothing per th DEC but just forum talk. Vaguely remember hearing that number at the hatchery. What would your guess be. Before this I was thinking 10-15k

Just a guess, but if they are getting 2 K in the hatchery, they have to be getting at least 20K in the river.  Think of the number of stinkers in the back channels up in the petting zoo, then think of all that go to NJ, PA, etc from Town hole up through the ball park on a daily basis, it adds up to a lot of fish over the month and a half that they are running.

HEY-for a change of pace---
Did my first bow hunt this AM-
No tree stand up and more for Turkey than Deer butt-
As I got outa the truck at 6 am 2 yotes fired off 50 yards down the hill.
Then an Owl went nuts in the same area.
Then bout 20 minutes later a flock of Turkeys tree putted quite a while and came down in the same spot.
All out of sight now because I had walked off a hundred yards and took a stand by a big tree on a rock wall by a small field.
Then a doe and two very tiny skippers showed bout 45 yards out on the edge of the field.
Then took a small hike looking for the Turkeys and had another Doe and 2 bout 35 yards out.
The Doe came in broadside to about 30 yards eating nuts-passed
Got muggy as all get out and left bout 9am.
GREAT START

Saw 5 flatheads this morning.
Sat there with the box trying to bring in some Turkey and 2 doe walked up about 45 yards out and bed.
Was sitting on a big rock right in the open Oaks  smoking listening  for an answer to a gathering call.
Guess they really trust Turkeys.
Have passed for 2 days waiting to arrow a bird.

Will get over THAT soon- lol.

That's great your getting out and seeing game Trev .
It's just to darn warm for me to wander into the woods right now .
The NY southern deer bow season starts Oct -1 and hope it cools down enough to harvest and prepare meat before it spoils . They pushed turkey back ( last year ) until 2nd week (11/5) before deer gun season ( used to be 10/1) due to low turkey #'s .
That works for me as all heck breaks loose at that time . Deer or turkey with a crossbow , if it walks out, I'm firing .
Good luck

We opened the 15th of Sept.
Have had a nice flock of birds roosted on my small permit property each morning- wont go near the roost and set up a hundred yards away- Each AM they loudly come down and move off-
Different directions each day.
Mostly impossible to call them back when they are headed off in the AM.
Don't want to bust the roost with a bow and scare them off.
Might slip in close with shotgun in a couple of weeks though.

HT-I just received a calendar from the office of my state senator of the open season dates for hunting, trapping and fishing and was surprised to see they cut Fall  turkey back to October 15-28, 1 bird either sex.  I realize the turkey numbers are down but New York state has failed to live up to the original agreement under which I purchased my lifetime license.  Under that agreement I was allowed to hunt longer and take 2 birds of either sex.  Its a one sided proposition once the state takes your license fees but offers no remedy when they change the regulations.

Lifetime tag-  must be nice--here in Ct seniors have received a free basic hunting/fishing tag for some time-
NO more- next year we pay again.
Bet they make millions on the change-NOT.
If its possible to tax or charge a fee Ct govt will do it sooner or later.

Re: just mussing-- 2016/09/22 15:05:07 (permalink)
r3g3- A couple of years ago I purchased a CT out of state license for fresh/saltwater fishing.  A week after the state legislature had a roll back of licensing fees and extended me a $20
credit towards the following years license.  Due to illness I did not buy a fishing license the next year and since that credit was for one year only I lost the $20 to the great state of CT.  LOL

As for the lifetime license, I was young enough and had the funds to make the purchase.  Considering the way licensing fees have gone up since I did so it was a good investment.  The best part is that should I move out of NYS the license is still good and that includes no charge for deer management permit applications too.
