Brown Trout Lure Suggestions and Colors

I currently have some Rapalas in black/gold, blue/white, firetiger, silver/yellow, green/black, blue/black and various rooster tails, joe flies, and spoons. What do you guys have the most luck with for brownies? I'm tired of catching rainbows. I try to target browns and have some luck, but I'm trying to increase my odds.

When I'm getting refusals from browns, the retrieve seems to be the biggest factor. Normally, for me, the stocker browns like a very erratic retrieve. I'd try the joe flies and jerk baits fished with a stop and go erratic action.

Go fishing in places that have mostly browns instead of mostly rainbows.

Alright, I will try this. And D-nymph, places that are only stocked with brownies are few and far between, at least where I am.

Live minnows and night crawlers are good live bait options, also a rebel wee craw in natural brown or olive green is a great lure for brownies.

I'm going to try this darker green Rapala I found in my tackle. It's dark green, but semi-clear as well.

Color choice is more dependant on weather/water conditions. Change often til you find what they want.

I usually do switch often to find what they want. I try to go more natural/darker colors in clear water and in murky water unnatural/brighter colors.

Try fishing at night, browns are very active after dark.

Then perhaps expand your range?  There is no real bait/lure/fly that browns take & rainbows don't.  You're kind of asking an unanswerable question.  Go fish Spring Creek or the Little J.

Well rarely are brown trout caught on powerbait and eggs. They tend to like more live food like minnows and insects. That's why I was just seeing what colors people use for Rapalas and what other kind of minnow lures people like to use.

I don't chase stocked trout as much as I used to, but it always seemed to be that streams and lakes stocked at in May had a pretty good mix of browns.  I assume this was probably due to their heartier nature.  Might find what yer lookin' for if you find some May stockings in your area.

Wax worms or minnows seemed to work pretty well for 'em.

D-nymph is right it has more to do with what was put in then anything else. All stocked trout are dumb and bite on almost anything for the first couple weeks after they get put in its not that the browns are smarter then the rainbows and only hit on certain baits. Find the right presentation and as soon as u start catching good numbers of trout stick to it and hopefully you will hook into a couple browns.

I've found that with artificials, yellow with gold blades work best for browns and white with silver blades for rainbows. My favorite for larger browns is a Renoski sonic swing minnow (rainbow). It doesn't appear to have any special action, but the larger browns really go after it. I also like going after dark with live bait, but the larger rainbows are active then too.

Id have to agree that it seems like the brownies like gold blades as opposed to silver, same with rapals, ive done better with gold/black than silver and black

When it comes to flies and lures, the overwhelming majority of Brown trout I've caught have come to Brown trout patterns/colors. Whether Rapalas, Panther Martins, Joe's Flies, streamers, whatever, they seem to prefer thinking they're eating a smaller Brown trout.

Lures: Any silver, gold, or black inline spinners and purple or chartreuse Shadow Raps.
Baits: Whole Nightcrawlers or Minnows on a circle hook with a slip sinker rig.

South Bend is one of my fave trout lures, and have used them for brook, rainbow, brown, and cutthroat. For the little ones, I'd use a 1/8 oz lure. Nothing larger than that. Oh, and make sure you don't use anything larger than 4 lb test line. Two pound test is preferable. Hope this helps!

william, I do well this time of year (spawning) for Browns by fishing lures slow & in the upper water column close to shore. Although I like gold,it doesn't seem to matter, but I do better with spinners than spoons. The state just put Browns in Indian lake & keystone state park,if you are in this region.  sam
