SteelHead

I've been invited o go steel head fishing for the first time in PA by a couple of friends.  i was wondering if anyone has been up there recently?  Which streams and bait are hot?  Any help is appreciated, as I rarely get off work, and don't want to waste a trip with gas prices.

I've taken some advice and have been talking to a few people and checking poor richards.  Looks as if the forcast may be alright this weekend.  I was wondering if anyone knew which streams are the better ones, or even if any hole are beter than others at this time of year.

seriously man, you should wait until springtime for your first trip. if u had gone before and had some experience steely fishing, i would say, why not, go for it.  But if its your first time, this trip may leave a bad taste in your mouth, it will be difficult fishing.

two years ago in the exact same conditions i had 4 friends not listen to my warnings. We went and I really didnt want to. They all except one, spent three days sitting in the hotel while i fished 16 mile alone. I caught 3 fish all weekend. None of them have been back. Every stream except 16 mile was a complete lockup.

    Anyone remember this pic

    that was the trip.

I'd think I have to say the steelhead4ever forecast is looking to be correct. Even thought its your first time its going to be high and muddy with the ice melt. If it melts like they are calling for with these warm temps.Goodluck but have fun freezing, watching high muddy creeks with ice edged creeks, and wasting your money. But ok have fun.

The streams will definitely NOT be "locked up", but they will be on the higher and muddy side.  As long as there is open water, you have the opportunity to catch fish.  I don't think it will be a stellar weekend, but I do think some fish can be caught.  I'm heading up to do some exploring!  Tight Lines.

Sunday is actualy shaping up to look like a decent day, at least for the smaller streams.  I'll be fishing for sure.

Not sure if you checked the local post. All the east side streams are in great shape today. Fish on is the norm for this side of town today! Stop in and visit me at East End Angler, right next to Partners Tavern. Don't worry about the smell of fish, it is the minnows. East End Angler, 4702 East Lake Rd. Rt 5. Right between 4 & 7 mile creeks.

Just got home from a great trip.  I caught 13, with the largest being 13.5 lbs.  My friends did just as well.  they were hitting on everything.  Plenty of fresh fish.

Indications early in the week were it was going to be an iffy but it turned out to be excellent. Goes to show when some folks ask that far in advance as to conditions for upcoming dates that anything could happen. At the beginning of the week I would have guessed it would be tough sledding on the weekend but watching the weather and looking at the stream gages we took a shot and were pleasantly surprised with a good day. Great flow and color and many cooperative fish, many spewing eggs.

Does anyone know why the steelhead from Erie do not have orange flesh?  I've had steelies from out west and also SAMS club and they have always looked like salmon.

Proobly because they don't spend any time in salt, as do w. coasters. Same with great lakes Salmon.

back in the day when i was using fresh eggs and  still TRYING to  find a way to make steel taste good, I recall one that had orange meat.

gave up trying to make 'em taste good though.
i determined there wasn't enough strong seasoning, mariade or smoke to BURY the taste of the flesh....
