7:05 AM, Southern 2B
18 yd shot, 50 yd recovery
8 pt although right G3 is broke off and has just about an inch still left.

@ 40 yds, when he stopped after the initial hit, I could see the blood pouring out of him and hear it spilling on the leaves. Got both lungs and a big slice in the heart.

Was really foggy this morning where I was at and when he was coming in, had a tough time scoping him out through the binocs.  I knew he was fairly heavy, had decent brows and G2's and definitely saw a G3 on the left side.  Put the binocs down and debated...
When he was at 18 yds slightly quartering away, I gave in.  The one I passed up last monday would have defintely "scored" higher but this one has more character and his main beams are actually bladed b/w the brow and G2.   He was a really heavy deer too, at least 3.5 yrs old.  Worst part was, just as he did his death wobble, he fell down a steep ravine..
Got to him a little after 7:30 am and didn't finish up loading him into the truck until 10:30 am and I needed help to do it.

Congratulations Eyes, that's a good looking buck in my book.  Always a trophy, regardless of the rack.

I relocated a tree climber today, figured might be a good time since the corn was knocked down.  Didn't see squat except for a Fox Squirrel on 'roids', man that thing was huge, noisy and, a PITA.  I'm thinking  I may need to do some squirrel huntin'.

Good going Eyes. I  tried to find a old doe today but the bucks wouldn't leave me alone, had two different eights offer me shots at 10 and 25 yds, both while making scrapes, and saw a couple young ones. They were all in the seek phase. Next 3 days look like fishing days rather than hunting weather wise.

Congrats man!  Great buck!!

I was out Saturday evening and the woods were pretty quiet.  I'm off this Thurs through the following Wednesday, so it looks like I'll finally have some time to spend in a tree.  Starting to get some good daylight pics so my hopes are high.

After at least 10 sits from my ground blind and not seeing one deer. It happened today, the place is just tore up with scrapes,7:15 big body nasty buck come in only the wrong way at 30 yards could have shot but some brairs here and there,so no shot. Blow the grunt call acts like he wants to come but doesn't,walks over the hill, wait a few then grunt two seires,I see a tree rocking back and forth,he's coming,he walks to a scrape only trouble it's a straight on shot,he makes almost 180 turn giving me the shot, put the pin and inch or two in front of the hind leg, hits offset should 60yards and down. Big body decent 8 point 13.5 inside but high 6 inch G2's.  Made this old man happy. Congrats to all successful hunters, no don't give up. Doesn't matter with this heat,it's time. Funny thing I only saw 5 deer since I started hunting about a week now and all have been bucks and legal  a 7pts3 8's and the big nasty 11 pts today not one doe. Now it's on to Ohio.

I'm not sure, even though we've seen proof of scrapes and swollen necks, if the rut is wide spread.  I don't know, maybe wishful thinking on my part but, I think the activity is spotty at best.

Sure is exciting, to see the reports, and fun reading the stories by the guys that have had success as well as, the stories (not mentioning any names) by those who continue to find humor as they continue their day to day adventures hunting the elusive PA. White-Tail.

Tends to take the edge off the frustration, reading about others finding laughter in their "plight"?   Stupid deer.

Re: Early season results?? 2015/11/03 21:04:49 (permalink)
My arthritic hands make it hard to skin deer and with the heat today took my deer for what's called a box and cut. Basically it's skinned and quarterd, for 20 bucks, and the backstraps stripped off. You loose maybe 8- 10lbs of trim meat off the brisket, ribs and all little where the rump roast where but I can live with that, and my wife really convinced me to do it. The interesting thing was the processer kept asking me where I got the deer well I really didn't want to tell him,but what he really wanted to know was if it was shot in Pa. The PGC told them they can't do deer from Ohio or WV.due the  C W D. Anyone else's area like this. I live in Beaver co.  Hope we don't get this, the herds thin as it is.

Ok my story no AM hunt , went out this afternoon got set up checked scrapes , run a drag rag with doe scent , made another mock scape with Tink 69 , checked camera's only one new picture little 4pt & couple doe with him. In stand at 3:45 the little 4pt came in about 4:15 .... Then the guy that has the land next to where I hunt decides to cut fire wood. Had tractor running & saw fired up until dark. Guess he figured winter is coming next week . Oh well I'll be there at daybreak tomorrow .....

Re: Early season results?? 2015/11/03 22:04:19 (permalink)
BT are ya familiar with the "golf Ball" technique of skinning deer?  Cutting around the neck and pulling enough skin loose to get a golf ball inside.  Tie a rope over the skin around the golf ball and use a come-along, winch, ATV or, even your car to pop the skin right off.  Pay attention of course to where you have the deer anchored.  Generally a section of 4x4 layed across the rafters of the garage will do.  Slow easy pulling should be all that is needed.  Also be aware of your overhead garage door as the rope, chain or, even the deer may come in contact with the door or frame.  Needles to say your anchor rope or chain should be substantial enough to sustain this type of pulling.

I know a couple guys that pull  the skin off as the dear lays on the floor than hoisting for a hosing and cleaning before butchering.  Lay the deer on a cheap tarp or plastic sheet to help keep it and your garage floor clean.

I know a lot of what I mentioned is common sense but sure as all heck, some idjut will end up ripping his garage door off or, pulling the roof in, if not, using a  anchor rope too small for the job and, slingshot a deer carcass through his car windshield.

On second thought, "box and cut" may be the way to go.

Re: Early season results?? 2015/11/04 09:19:17 (permalink)
Went for a walk yesterday to check cameras, had my gun with me incase i find some turkeys (yes i had orange on as well)

Anyway while pulling cards I walked up on a 6 point, got in bow range, didnt care i was there. Pulled that card turned around walked 100-150 yards to the next camera. On the way there I walked up on a doe bedded down. She got up slow, looked at me, flicker her tail and walked slowly away. I waited till she left my view, then i started walking the final 50 yards to the camera. Wouldn't you know it I walked back up on her and she stood there looking at me. That was the second time in a few minutes I had her at 30 yards. I got the card and left with her watching me the whole time.

No turkeys to be seen, but after seeing those deer I starting to think deer are easy.

Re: Early season results?? 2015/11/04 18:28:04 (permalink)
Congrats eyes and big tuna.

Took the day off and was in the woods this morning before the sun came up. Sat from 5:30-10 where I saw the 8pt Saturday. Saw nothing. Decided I'd climb down, have some lunch and a break, then head back up. As I creep out the path and get to the edge of the field heading back to the cabin, a doe comes barreling around the corner right at me followed by a big wide 8pt. She's slips while trying to skirt me, recovers, and stops 15 yds into the edge of the woods. The buck stops 30yds away behind some brush and saplings. The does watching me, I'm watching the buck, and the bucks watching the doe. I do my best tree impression while pulled up and waiting for the buck to give me a 25yd shot in a clearing, all the while the doe is snorting at me trying to figure me out. Went on for what seemed like forever, but was actually about 30sec.. She finally turns and walks off and the buck slips off after her without giving me a shot. I looped back around and climbed back into the stand. Saw nothing the rest of the day, but man that was an exciting 30sec. I'll be out again Saturday morning looking for that guy.

Well Crappie Slayer didn't have that much excitement but I wasn't in stand at 5:30 but was there at day break. My calendar said it was going to be a good day to hunt.... It lied didn't see crap, not even any tree rats .... Lol stayed until 10 , left & checked camera's. Find that they was 560 pictures on my Stealth cam. Now I figured going to have all kinds of action but only the small 4pt & a couple more doe.... After checking things out I find it was taking a picture every minute also my battiers were almost dead.... Brought camera home put card in laptop was like watching a time elapsed video .... lol after looking closer I realized that yesterday when I checked it and reset it I hit the wrong mode..... I guess not really sure , reset everything tonight and will set it back up tomorrow.... That is how my day went... Didn't go out tonight to many things to do....

Almost the same thing happened to me a few years back, I got down and took mid day walk, doe comes busting in at 15 yards chased by a big 18.75inch 8pt. The buck is zoned out with a far way look, but in some brairs he just needed to take two steps.Doe bust me bye bye buck. You wonder how I tell the spread? I killed him the third day of gun season, minis half a brow. Crazy stuff happens in the rut,you got to be there for the show. Keep plugging away it can happen in a heartbeat. Good luck guys.

Seeing even more dead bucks (mostly 1.5 yr olds) dead along the road.

A little warm this AM compared to the last few.  Starting Sat., looks to be decent weather for all day sits and rut hunting.  Good luck fellas.

Off tomorrow and need to decide what to do: head to the deer stand and film, take the boat out on the river or break out the golf clubs (as long as the rain holds off!).

My brother left work, decided to enjoy the weather in the woods today. He found a tree and swept out a spot with his foot.
Pulled out his range finder to range some trees. Looks at the FIRST tree and behind in the the finder he sees a deer stand up. Oh it has horns. Sprays some doe pee
in the air gets out his grunt call blows it twice. The deer runs in to 40 yards. Stops looks at him. A tree limbs snaps to its right. it turns broadside and STANDS there. He puts a rage stealth into its side. IT runs 40 yards and flops to the ground.
WTF-----he wasn't in the woods 15 minutes. AND walked in after 7am........
BTDT------he found that STUPID DEER.......

Re: Early season results?? 2015/11/06 00:00:10 (permalink)
Congrats to Wags brother. Maybe a little luck, but every time I get a deer it's some luck involved. AS I STRESS IT'S THE RUT. High temps or not it's time. Would hot temps stop you from this once a year event? lol My buddy watched a giant 20 inch plus chase a doe today at 12:30 pm in Ohio while he was heading to Subway for lunch. You never Know. He just left the woods, and less than a quarter of a mile he see this, who know the doe could head back and be under his stand in less than 5 minutes. Unless I got a good pattern on a early season buck in the bachelor group I've been passing on hunting till late October. It's been working well for me the last 10 years or so. A lot more scouting than hunting seem to work for me. The deer woods changes daily. From Tuesday to Thursday there's some huge rubs around my ground blind,my son's camping on this spot now.He hasn't seen a deer yet but it only takes a hot doe to come by or the buck to check that huge scrape and it's over.
