FLOATING FLY LINES

I strictly roll cast, drift, swing flies for steel head in the tribs.  How different are the tapers on the WF Floating fly lines I'm shopping for?  Great prices on Cortland 333 and 444 but they're listed as "Bass" taper, "Saltwater" taper.  Looking at saving $40 to $50 on some of these.  And is the Cortland 333 as good as the 444?

If you strictly roll cast , a double taper will perform better, and when one end starts to go, you can turn it around and get twice the life out of the line, no small consideration with lines up to 70 bucks and more apiece.  Those tapers (Bass and Saltwater) are designed to move and turn over more air resistant flies under windier conditions; if you fished a lot of intruders or big streamers at the mouths and in the lake, where you could over hand cast, they might get you the extra distance and present the flies well, but you might sacrifice some control or presentation subtlety, might not roll cast as well, or behave properly if you are also using shot, when you are up in the tributaries and using smaller flies and mends to set up the swing.  Double tapers definitely mend more effectively than WF"s if you are out past the taper section.  333's cost less, don't last as long as 444's, are probably not quite as good a coating, but are certainly adequate lines for all kinds of stream and lake fishing.  Ya gets what ya pays for!

You are welcome.  Just be sure to donate my 10% of what I saved you to a Project Healing Waters group near you.  Thank them for the service that makes us all able to fish some of this water (It's our own service to a job that makes it possible for us to fish in the Pay to Play's, if we choose!)
