Marine audio units and speakers and VHF Radio

Any recommendations? I am looking to put a unit into the new boat.. I don't need anything crazy but would like something nice for when ihave my friends out. I have looked at a few but not looking to spend more than $200..

What do you guys think of this one is it any good?

Also need a VHF radio, would you recommend handheld? they are alittle more money but seem worth it. I can wire one to the battery I have 3 batteries on the boat. Thanks for any help. Ed

If you are planning on fishing Erie I would suggest a solid mount radio and a good antenna. The transmit distances on the handheld may not be what you want, though I haven't shopped the hand held radios in a few years. On Erie it is not unusual to be out 8+ miles, and if there aren't other boats in your area and you run into a problem that isn't the place to find out you can't reach shore with your radio...  Holding a portable while trying to operate a boat in rough water isn't great either.

We have a uniden and it has worked great..  I will have Erie Mako post up the make model of the radio and antenna set up.  We have it set that we have a base and antenna in another boat and just switch the radio back and forth between the two also... so just because it is a regular mount doesn't mean you can't use it on multiple boats.

OK... called EM for the details....

    Uniden Solara
Shakespeare classic 8 ft fiberglass antenna.

Most of the newer radios are also capable of being tied into the GPS of some fish finders to allow you to transmit your coordinates automatically if you hit the distress button on it.

with that set up we were able to speak from an area 3 miles into PA from the Ohio Line to a base near Ashtabula last fall during an incident.  I don't know what the air miles are for that, but I felt better knowing we had the capability.

yep, that is the same one we use, here is another distributer.   This site also has a ratcheting rail mount (stainless) which is how we have ours attached.  I don't know how yours will be mounted.

Eman.... the WalMart one looks right....
the overton one doesn't specify if it is the 'lightweight'   or the slightly heavier 5206-N.   If it is the 5206N then I would go for it, but I get suspicious when a website doesn't specify the actual model # of an item.  There are a lot of items which can fit similar descriptions, but be a much older model.  I would send them a request for more info before I would buy that one.

When I am internet researching I look for specific model #s so I can compare oranges to oranges when doing the research or price checking.  There are a few sites which are bad for not providing decent descriptions and I don't want to buy something and find out it is a version/model that has been updated 3 times since it was produced.  Technically it may fit the description.... but I prefer hard details when shopping for these type things.
