Fished near Chapel Forks on 1-26-08. About 4.5" of good ice. I fished about 4 hours. Caught 2 Pike(1@19" & 1@33"). People were catching a few Perch & a couple of small Walleyes, as well as a few Pike.

I thought the big deal at kinzua this time of year was to fish below the dam. Its a tailwater so the water temp should be in the 50-60 which means active trout when the rest of the trout streams have a slow bite.

Try more like high 30's on a good day.  Once a lake "turns over" in late fall the water layers reverse making the temp and oxygen levels homogeneous from top to bottom.  What this means is that the water on the bottom of the lake will be mid 30's and possibly low 40's combine this with some snow melt and there you have it.

Anyways I have been hearing reports of people catching fair numbers of 12-18" eyes and a decent number of trout as well below the dam.  I haven't spoke with anyone who has been on the ice up there yet.

Esox you are right about Fall turnover being a homogenous mixture, but the next stage is winter stratification where the colder water stratifies to the top, because it is less dense.  So actually in winter there is a thermocline as well........Because they draw from the bottom on kinzua there would actually be a slight temp difference in the water, not a ton, but warmer than if they drew from the top of the water column.

You can call the Corp. of Engineers phone # listed below for conditions at the Kinzua Dam. It gives water level, discharge rate & river & reservoir temps., etc. It is a recording, so you don't have to talk to a person for info. The river temp. as of today is 35 degrees F., no where near 55-60 as stated above.

If there is fishable ice, you most likely won't be able to get out to it unless you take a canoe!  Maybe up in the reservation but the water will probably be dirty and fishing stink anyways.  From reports, it was great fishing this past weekend before all the rain.
