I did do shenango yesterday.  brought home about 20 crappies...a few perch and some nice gills.  most caught trolling nano divers.  also lost 1 giant striper at boat and caught at least 50 white bass or hybrids or small stripers.  I cant tell the difference.  my buddy wants to eat them (he eats anything) but we are afraid that we will have a live well full of small stripers and get nailed.  anybody know an easy way to tell the difference between a white perch, white bass, hybrid and stripers?  good day on water!  I know this is wrong forum...sorry.

There really is no easy way to tell the difference of white bass and hybrids under 15".  Usually when they get larger, you can tell their outward appearance a bit more.  More pronounced lines on the wiper, and dark back.  White perch don't have all of the lines.  I think a lateral line only.

There is a tongue patch that is the only true way to tell them apart, but is really small, even in a 25" wiper.  I can't imagine it is very easy to distinguish in 12" fish.

Wife and I fished pyme  yesterday launched at Snodgrass at noon and fished the entire evening.I did my best and tried everything drifted jigs and crawlers, trolled flicker shads and also trolled crawler harness but only could manage a few catfish and a small perch. Was a really nice day out there though a good breeze and not too hot was fun but sure wish the fishing would improve.

Congratulations Crappy..................  when are ya holdin' open house?

PS.  I prefer my walleye and crappie deep fried in beer batter.  (Schiltz if ya don't mind).

Marco I don't know if this information will help but, it makes for some interesting reading for the next time nature calls.

Certainly is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to the hybrids so, anything under twenty inches is back to the water for me.  I'm sure looking forward to my first legal hybrid.

So I'm heading up in the morning "day break" to do a little fishing and then the wife is having a picnic with the niece and nephew so I'll be in charge of pontoon boat rides!! Might do some serious fishing Sunday afternoon!

The wife and I fished out of bay 41 yesterday. Got a bunch of perch, mostly small but I did weed out enough for a dinner, some gills and some nice eating size channels. No eyes but it was a very nice afternoon to be out.

One of the better threads on this dead site.

Chris - Congrats on the vacation home.  I'm sure you'll have that place looking nice in no time.  You have some great craftsman skills.  Hopefully the boys took on some, and give their old man a hand, before they end up with kids of their own and their free time slips away.

BTDT - I've never heard of dipping in flour after batter dipping.  I'm guessing extra crunchy.  Will have to give a shot.  If looking for a good tip to grill, coat with mayo, season to liking (salt & pepper or whatever), then grill on a cleaned oiled grill on high heat.  Mayo will keep it from sticking, and give you tasty grill marks.  Almost as good as frying.

Roy - Good luck on the Pymie place.  I'm still years away from getting any sort of vacation home.  Pymie would be the top of the list for me (although I'd love something in NC or FL, but don't have the time or money to use it enough).  I've looked at some places (online) to just fantasize, some good deals to be had.  I've tried to convince my folks to get a place near Pymie, but no go.  They'd rather just complain about Pgh and dream about getting away from it, instead of doing.

Oh yeah...  The heart of the thread, reading the reports, keeps me going when my fishing is slow (catching and getting out).  Arthur is living up to it's Dead Sea nickname.  At least for the time that I am able to get out and fish (midday), and only one trip in the past month + (although did get a week vacation to OBX in that time).  Hoping to get a dusk or dawn run in, and remind me why the lake is worth fishing.  Although, if Pymie were equal distance, I'd rarely fish Arthur.  Work is kicking my rear, so just getting to read threads like this is likely my fishing time until the end of Sept.  Sucks, but great to see a thread like this in times that fishing is just a day dream for me...

Re: PYMATUNING FISHING REPORT 2015/08/19 11:55:21 (permalink)
Porktown I appreciate the heads-up on the non-sticking mayo tip, will definitely give that a try.  I'm still waitin' for my first legal stripper to try  on a grill.

I don't think Arthur is the only 'dead sea' at the present time as it seems good catchin' reports have been far and few between on all the lakes talked about on these boards.  Although, I'm sure, fish are being caught by some.

I have to chuckle at your comment about workin and wishin' ya was fishin' as I've certainly BTDT, for sure.  Just been thinkin' myself about writing about how things (fishin'/huntin') seem to change after retirement.  Might be interesting just to compare notes with other retirees.

Hang in there, better times are coming..............

PS. Dredging in beaten egg then dipping in corn meal, flour, crunched Wheaties, cracker crumbs, ect............... goooood!
PSS.  Over use of garlic.............  baaaad!(lol)

Tight lines.

Re: PYMATUNING FISHING REPORT 2015/08/19 16:06:17 (permalink)
FYI - Stripping is legal, it's what they do for the extra tips, that the law doesn't look kindly on.  And they are humans, most likely daddy issues, tossing them on the grill Geoffrey Dahmer style isn't going to help their problems.  Covering with mayo, well...  Stripper spelling thing never gets old (to my simple mind at least).

Good luck on the legal striper!  Cpt. Hook seems to have a good pattern down.  Maybe trade him some walleye fillets for some tips!

Those strippers that are too far over the legal size aren't very attractive.

Lol....just remember when you catch a big striper, dont send your wife a text that says. "Just got my self a big fat stripper". You will get an immediate response if you do. Just saying.

Head up to the the lake this afternoon I think!

While they may be easy to catch... strippers are know to carry invasive species that can spread quickly .

As far as fishing, its been slow for me on pymy for me when I have made it out.  Hopefully things starting to cool down will get the eyes turned on again.

Buddy amd i ended up with 2 in the box and 2 short ones in the last hour. Caught a few big cats too. Drifted jigs and crawlers again, 11-12 fow.

Went out Sunday, big storm from the northwest pushed us back to the Jamestown launch. Went back up a little ways after the storm passed and got three 16"s in 6-8 ft in about 45 mins. I guess some of those 14.5"s have finally passed to legal status!
