I guess it wasn't a farce after all.

Took me a while to dig this up and here's what I found.

SaltWaterRocks, the guy who told me the story worked at a carnival that was taken place in Monongahela at the time.

I'm not buying it ! There are already discrepancies in this story. Salt says the fish was not in too bad of shape and the article says the fish was already too beat up and not much left because animals got to it !  This is 1986 and I know digital cameras are not around yet but those cheap 110 cameras were every where! I can't believe someone would not attempt to run down to the grocery store and grab a camera off the shelf for such a rare, rare find. They are even at a sporting goods store and no one is even thinking about a photo for backup ! This had to be the fishing story of the year in that area! Someone would of had too say go get a camera because nobody will believe the size of this monster ! 35mm cameras were also fairly common I know because I lugged one around for years. 67 inches is just to hard for me to fathom without some kind of verification. I'm not calling someone a liar but I think there is cause for serious doubt......that's just my opinion.
Rich, we usually wait till the season reopens in May.

in 1980-81 I caught a musky that hung over my tail gate 4 inches on each side...that was on a 78 Ford 48" gate. Caught in spring using chubs for walleye on 6lb. test. Guessed weight was 33lb. It was 1 o clock in morning ...put on stringer for a minute then decided to let go. She was loaded with eggs and I sure couldn,t afford to mount it. Had a guy that I worked with with me,Gary Jones, who played in a group called the Bar Flies. Biggest fish I ever caught.

Fellas, I know fish gain size with speculations. My son and I were ice fishing P.I. quite a few winters ago(7-8) and we started to hear rumors from other fishermen of a 17" perch. I'm game I have heard of such creatures and had to see it. Well as we were going back to the #3 parking area and loading up the gear to move to Misery a fella we talked to finally was a first person observer of said beheamouth. He points to a shanty that looked 1/2 mile out. I looked at my son and he said lets go. So we walked with tape measure all the way out. I didn't need the tape, it was a nice 14" jumbo. And I did tape it at 14", which is a true jumbo. That illusive 17" perch must be out there because I have heard of so many of them. I sure haven't seen one. There is still probably a bunch of anglers talking about the 17" perch someone caught that day.
I saw a carp swim by me once, that I still hesitate to tell others how big it was. Knowone would beleave me!

As far I know though, a 59" musky is the longest that has been officially recorded.

I guess I've always been a doubter on certain unbelievable things all my life. Especially outdoor events that involve hunting and fishing. Lets say I'm cautious,  I don't doubt that there is some truth to those stories but I'm more inclined to believe if it sounds too good or extreme it's usually false. To me when one has a photograph it's about 99% believable not 100% because photos can also be distorted some what. I always say show me several photos of that object and then I'm usually sold. I'm talking "extreme stories" not your average. I don't need to see several photos of a normal size fish or deer I don't doubt those .Too many times there are false photos posted on the internet and phones of false trophy fish or game animals. They usually post only "one photo" and usually there are no people recognizable in that photo. They will say this enormous deer (photo) was killed locally and my buddy's friend seen it and sent me the photo. All you see in the photo is a dead trophy deer with hunters boots standing next to it. Not 3 or 4 photos just one !! When you backtrack to find out who really seen it, it leads to nowhere ! In this digital camera age why would anybody only take one photo of a lifetime trophy or something truly rare ? Dead batteries can happen ( I know ) but if that animal or fish is being kept that excuse won't fly. Once again I'm talking the rare, extreme, almost totally unbelievable tales !

just a side note, but i knew an old timer who fished the lake daily in the spring and early summer and hated muskies to no end.  i heard if he caught one while wading, into the undergrowth it went.  heading out one evening many years ago, i saw a young guy with a 'ski on a stringer.  a fish well over forty inches.  i asked him where he caught it.  he said he didn't.  he said he saw on old guy catch it and after landing it, he threw into the bushes, from where he fetched it.  makes one wonder, eh?

Captain, anytime you say "I'm not calling anyone a liar", in reality you are.  The article was in the May 18 edition of a Bend Oregon Paper.  How long did the story take to make it to Bend?  Obviously it went out UPI, but how long before they picked up a story of a dead muskie in Monongahela?  So what explains the discrepancies you point out?  One, in 1986 fishing narcissists weren't as common as they are now so no, we didn't have a camera.  The muskie was pulled out of the river on the east bank just below the old Monongahela bridge location.  It was in good condition, not something you would run to the taxidermist, but not the condition described in the article.  Now, speculating a little here, it sounds to me by the comments made in the article that it was either "found" near pigeon creek or the aquatorium.  Both of these features are on the west side.  Did a dead fish swim the river?  Doubtful, but the other feature of the Monongahela river in this area was that, at that time, all of the boat launches were on the west side.  I don't remember the date I saw the fish, but I do know what I was doing.  I was crappie fishing; specifically, I was headed for pigeon creek to hit the schools of crappies that used to commonly spawn there.  Although I cant say for sure the date, I know I was crappie fishing and NOT walleye fishing.  I checked, walleye(and therefore musky) came in May 3.  I find it reasonable to think(guess, postulate) that they may have picked that fish up taken it to the boat ramp to measure it, and then dumped it back in the water(at one of the west side launches) because it was too early in the season.  One launch, at that time, was an unimproved launch right at the aquatorium and the other was Hannas Harbour just about maybe two miles upriver.  Either one would put it on the side I presume is being talked about in the article, and either one would give it time to change from the condition I saw it in to the condition described.  All speculation(other than I was crappie fishing) but it makes sense.

A photo makes it 99% not 100%?  So the Holocaust, the assassination of JFK, landing on the moon and the recent ISIS murders, all are only 99%?

Once again I used the word doubt full because that's what I am. I don't doubt the whole story about the fish I just have a problem believing the length of 67 inches. I highly doubt that I'm alone on that thought. Maybe the guys that measured it were not as accurate. I guess the bottom line is once again, without some other verification there is no proof of that size it's just word of mouth.  I said "a" photo as in one photo only . Yes there are hundreds of pictures and videos of the Holocaust, JFK , and moon landings and I do believe. There are also pictures of Big Foot, Loch Ness monsters, and aliens.......you guessed it I don't believe !

Wirenut if that is you, I am pretty sure you'll not need worry about 'spot burning'.  Something that ugly (no offense) will have not only that spot but, the whole stream and it's tributaries too!

Stateline ponds, lol.

I've got an idea where. Any suggestions on where we could store our guesses until/if the actual location is revealed? Make it into a betting affair. If only for p!ssing rights.

Or, losers buy the winners dinner (soup to nuts) at Luke's restaurant. Maybe we could get the facts from the man himself, if he was properly motivated.

Mikastorm I think ya hit it!

I'm seeing a R.R. bed (now the Samuel Justis Recreation Trail) in the background and the area blocked by the mosaic in the upper right hand corner is a R.R. trestle right at the confluence of E. Sandy Creek and the river.  Only Place I know between Franklin and Emlenton that has a picturesque view like this is Belmar.  The old R.R. trestle carrying the Sandy Creek Trail over the river will be just to the angler's left.

I'm thinking the R.R. trestle that carries the Sandy Creek Trail over Sandy Creek sits a bit further back from the confluence with the river.  Also, I believe the river at this point is not as wide and the current is faster.

I know the old R.R. crossed many tributaries to the Allegheny but, I don't recall any other trestles being right at the confluence any where between Franklin and Emlenton.

All this being said, I know nothing of the angler or to what extremes he may venture to, in fulfilling his dream of a world record Musky but, I would like to wish him the best of luck.  Both in catching that fish of a lifetime and, ice fishing on a river!

HEE HEE...............

I do have some of those short leader fishing lures available; couldn't use them effectively for toooooo many tourist boating on the lake.  However, I would liked to have tossed a few toward all those dang rental pontoons being piloted by "old hair men" trying to show off their junk!

Now get off that 'puter' and on your boat, Walcat.   Ummmmm, wait, what the heck am I doing on the 'puter'?

I gotta get.

Fished Pymatuning Saturday. Only caught 1 walleye 19 inches while drifting. Trolled leadcore for about an hour and caught nothing. There were people out there catching fish trolling Hot N Tot's Black and silver. Did all of our fishing just south of the causeway. For a time there was a mob of boats trolling just south of the PA bridge on the causeway. A friend talked to one boat that had taken 7 while trolling. Didn't see any boats on the stumps north of the causeway. Might be too late in the year for that. I'm just getting back into walleye fishing at Pymatuning after a 7 year break.
