Try putting your rattle antlers on a rope and dangle them in branches near  ground level it drives bucks nuts and keeps them from looking UP...WCW

That's a thought...dangling .....my set up may be challenging with that as my ladder is on a pretty steep hillside. I am 25 yards off a bench and right at eye level, but could bring them to look down the hill....THANKS BW

Put out a turkey decoy near that hillside stand so they see it when walking in  - sometime they trot off but generally come back outa curiosity. They stare at it- think they are waiting for it to move. Nice for bow turkey too- carry a call.

B  W  Its pretty early in the season I would get to your stand/blind about 45 mins/ 1 hour before sunlight. As far as using calls, rattles, even hot scents. I would wait for a few. never had any luck this early. Know cover scents are a must.  Although I had this new guy to my area  blow his grunt call every 20 mins or so and driving me CRAZY  LOL I'll bet he didn't know every time he blew that thing the deer would run to me, But were all yearlings    Good Luck and BE SAFE

Can also try running some fishing line over a few trees and down to a low branch, and shake it when rattling. It's very effective if you have a Buck decoy under it. But like BH1 said, it's still a bit early

i quit using scents all together. some may work but in my woods they dont. all scents have additives in them. whether to preserve them or what ever, but none of them smell exactly like the real thing. same with rattling. pieces of plastic hit together doesnt sound like bone antlers. and like they said, if you are rattling you should have something hanging to the ground to thrash the leaves alittle. makes a huge difference. most of all, play the wind and dont over hunt your stand. all the big boys know.

^^^^^ agree The best scents are to get a doe early and drain her pee into a air tight container, But you will have to use it within a day or two then it just turns.  Got totally  soaked last night to watch a few young deer run in circles just making me dissy  LOL

I don't know about collecting the urine of a doe but, I know about removing the scent glands that doe rub togeather while they urinate to wash the scent onto the ground. Placed into zip lock bags the scent released can be regulated into the air. Place one in the freezer while using one, which will last several days or, just freeze for next year.

The darker the glands, the better but, the doe need not be in estrous as the scent of musk is still strong enough to catch the attention of the boys.

Just something I learned back in the day.

Word of caution; do not hang the gland from a 'ladder stand' unless you'r looking to test your safety harness. Just sayin'....

I'm with Bings on this one, I'm always silent until shooting light starts.  I don't do much blind calling either even after the sun pops up.  I'd prefer to be able to see the buck I'm calling to and guage his reaction before I go wild with the grunts or rattling.

Normally the temp drops a couple degrees just before the sun starts to come up. I've been busted more than I care to admit in that half hour or so. Off to play in a tree. See you later.

This. I generally only call when I see a buck cruising and I am sure he will not come my way. I will call or rattle and see what he does.

Nice insight men...With work, I only get Mon. and Tues. to hunt. so over hunting I think I am good.

I have acorns by the bushels under my stand. I use acorn spray as a cover scent.
The deer have scratched the hillside down to the dirt.
Last sun through tues, I found 5 new rubs within 10 yards.
Hope the trail cam can give me some insight this week as to who's visiting.
Keep the updates coming.....let's make it a team effort---corny---LMAO

I am going to rig a shaker line Monday to a couple bushes below me, see how that pans out.

however I may hit a lake Monday for some fall trout fishing

Appears to be a good crop of acorns in my area also.

Just wondering, make your own spray?

    Good luck.... Be Safe.

No doubt the cooler air will cause your scent to drop and of course the warmer air will cause your scent to rise.

Any idea of which way the scent might be drifting while your on stand or walking to your stand.

What sure fire way is there to detect the direction of even the slightest movement of air.

Using the powder it's tough to detect that light a drift. There is a product I've seen advertised that uses fine fibers that you let loose in the air that might work. Don't recall what it is called. My comment on "down" is because there is normally a quick drop in the temp just before daylight over and beyond the normal and I thought you were asking a trick question.

No not a trick but, trivial question S-10 and your answer is correct as, was WCWs.

We don't know which way our scent travels when the winds are still so, I posed this question to see if anyone would mention the 'wind feather'.

I learned this trick from an old bird hunter. Many....... many moons ago.

It's not a true feather as, it is made from non-waxed dental floss. Strip a piece of floss with the edge of a knife as if you are trying to curl a piece of ribbon. In time the floss will fray and become fluffed. Tie this to your bow, gun, or branch and it will detect the slightest movement of air. Dental floss is tuff stuff and will last a long time and drys fast if wet.

The old bird hunter used this to find the direction of the air current before he released his dogs.

One thing I used to use on days like that was milkweed seeds. Used to keep a few dozen in a container in my jacket and pinch off the end.

If anything can find the direction of the wind it would be milkweed seed..... for sure.

But ya know...... with my luck..... my allergies would get fired up and I'd sneeze my way out of the woods. Worse yet, my eyes would start watering just as a wall hanger presents a shot. (lol).

Fun talkin' .......... best of luck to ya.

Hear you on the Monday wish.... I do. Just being nosey on the acorns, too bad there not white, that's like candy to deer and turkey. Also, I'm wondering and I bet we'll find out, if you can't wear the scent of a food source can you hunt over a food source?

Anyway your mentioning of the acorns made me laugh as I was fishing along the edge of a lake earlier this week. Not paying attention to the trees I was fishing under I was soon made aware they were oaks. I'm still finding acorns (red) rolling around my boat. Don't be laughin' either, those things hurt.

Keep the hope, Monday is right around the corner.

    Good hunting.
