Check out Davie McPhail on YouTube Saw his name the other day and I checked it out. He shows how to tie a Caddis Fly and by golly that may be the start your looking for.

I've sailed the concrete oceans and the asphalt seas where, the hills and mountains were waves to me............  Good stuff; Big trucks bring it

Unless it looks to you guys like its just a white craft fur dubbing brush colored w/marker. In that case, I got it.

    look at EP-styled flies

it is done by stacking different color material on top and on the bottom of the hook... then trimming
exactly the same as stacking deerhair

    Craft fur
    rams wool
    EP fibers
    SF blend
    take your pick

you can also do the entire fly the lighter color (white)... and then use markers/air brush to color

thanks for the insight. Appreciate it. I've done some as you described before and the head didn't have that nice round shape to it. I'll try some with more hair and see how they come out. I also did some all white with craft fur brush for the head and colored with marker, I think they came out OK. I'll try to get the wife to snap a few quality pics and post my results.

Make sure you use enough material... Way more than you think you need
That way it will flare and fill in when trimmed

Airbrushing will give you that nice firm line. And using a hard edge as a stencil/guide

I tied this one with all white craft fur with a dubbing brush head. Colored with marker. I think it looks OK.

Craft fur is not the easiest thing to stack.  It doesn't really spin either, not like deer hair, anyway.  I've stopped using it for stacking & instead use clumps of laser dub or ice dub or wool.  Wool is super easy.

Have you made craft fur dubbing brushes before?  It's easy once you figure it out & make a few in one sitting.

Instead of the way he does it with the fancy table, I use a 1 x 4 with a hook in the end of it & a cordless drill with a hook in the chuck instead of a drill bit.  Works great.  Important to get out the underfur or it'll just bunch up in the wire. I use brassie sized copper wire, spin it until the wire breaks, done.

I've seen that method before. But the first way I saw it done seems much easier for me. I just make a dubbing loop on the hook shank, carefully place the fur in the loop and spread it evenly, and spin the crap out of it with my hackle pliers picking out the trapped fur a few times during the spinning.

Yes, I know of that method, I've done it too, it doesn't work as well & is way more of a pain for me to tie.  For consistent looking ties & durability you can not beat the wire brushes.

Durability was one question i had about the method ive been using. The fur doesnt get trapped super tight. But once its wrapped on the shank it seems ok. I'll try some like that. Thanks.

Don't get discouraged if the first brush comes out messed up, it will.  Making brushes takes a bit of time to figure it out your method, but once you do, it's good every time.
