Trolling motor problem

I just rebuilt the lower unit of my Minn Kota trolling motor.  I put new brushes and new seals in it.   I put the unit back together but now it runs opposite.  If I turn to forward it runs in reverse and vice versa.  I took it back apart and switched the wires around but it is doing the same thing.  How do I fix this issue?

    Check your battery connections.

I tried just about everything.  Don't know what to try next.  Don't know if you can reverse the control lever or not.   I will try something.

The only thing I can figure is the one wire connecting to the brushes was loose.  I squeezed the wire connector with a pair of pliers to get a tighter fit.  I put it back together and it works fine.
