Good luck.  Gobbling weather should be better tomorrow if you can get out.  I took the day off in anticipation.  Guess I'll go in to work to save the vaca.

Was hunting with the crossbow. I managed to call in 4 different long beards to within 40 yards. Got shots at 2 of them and missed them both! First one was at 28 yards and I whiffed left. No explanation other than just a bad shot. Second bird was at 38 yards. Hit a branch.

Missed two long beards, lost two arrows complete with Lumenoks.

Oh well, the ups and downs of trying to do it the hard way.

ROOSTED 3 last night.....2 above the house(YES I mean over top) jake and a hen.
One in the hollow across the street.  Decided to leave these ones go as some buddies may join me Tuesday morning, one has never gotten his first turkey yet.
Took a walk down the hollow, about a mile or so. Set up at my old faithful tree. Got a gobble at 5:45. Put out a couple yelps to let them know i was there. Saw two roosted at 50 yards. A hen and a tom. He kept fanning out while roosted. He dropped down and pitched left. The hen followed 2 minutes later.  2 @ gobbling @ 100 yards. Never did see them.
Spotted Tom at 75 yards in full strut with his hen.
I had 3 hens run in to 20 yards. Spotted me and moved off. I hoped some guy would follow but no luck. Checked back on the tom and he is still there in the same spot now 30 minutes later.
5 deer move in between me and the tom. He just keeps on struttin'. 3 minutes go buy and see what I thought was another doe. Small body moving on the same path as the other 5. Out of the vines comes this scrawny **** coyote. He was following the 5 deer. 50 yards not a kill-able shot. With my mouth call I cried like a wounded animal. He stopped but then continued on after the deer. Toms still in his same spot now for an hour. In comes 4 deer from behind me. They spot me and run off. Yep tom's still there now 1 1/2 hours. I tried soft calling, excited, nothing got a response from him. Now 2 hours he's gone. I waited another ten or so then walked over to where they were. Ground was all dug up but NO BIRDS around......
DAM good morning afield.......let's hope for another tomorrow.....BW

Re: Struttin 2014/05/12 20:29:28 (permalink)
One buddy came with me this morning.... Set up what we believed was above him. While I was sneaking in I spotted a hen in the roost watching me. So I moved in further than I wanted. If you look at a clock face the tom gobbled at the center of the clock. I was at 3:00 and my buddy was at Noon.  The 2 hens flew down and moved up hill, to lets say the 1:30 spot on the clock. The tom came down last. My buddy only could see his tail feathers as he strutted straight towards me. Within 5 minutes I had him at 30 yards. Not knowing the exact spot where my buddy was I needed to get a more in close shot. So I worked him for 20 minutes as he strutted and stared me down. Something spooked the hens as they trotted down to him and then past him. He stayed fanned for 30 seconds more. The hens took to flight and he ran after them........
HOWEVER, i just roosted him again and in the same spot....... PRAY the rain holds off again.....

I LOVE THIS SEASON.............

OK  rain held off,  wish the heat would have....... Got in and set by 5:20..... spottted a shadow at 5:45, turns out to be a jake ---2" beard. Got tom to gobble around 6:00  saw him fly down. He moved straight up to field never saw him again.
To a walk, watched 2 struttin a hen at 3/4 mile away in the neighbors driveway.  Got them to gobble and 2 others, all at great distances an close to homes.
Moved location. Got one to gobble one time only. Crossed several coyote tracks
Took a ride---road hunting--LOL-- saw 17 in 20 minutes.

better luck next Mon/Tues..................

A friend has a gobbling hen on his property. Fooled him a few times and comes to his call repeatedly every day.
Then she hangs around  by his spot-wherever he sets up.
He said she makes all the right hen sounds and then occasionally throws in a nice gobble.
Problem is that every time he calls she comes right in from anywhere on the property and any Toms and other Hens around RUN off at the sight of her.
We can only figure she must be the meanest, nastiest confused bird around and the others are purely scared of her.
He said the others actually RUN when she shows up and she shows every time he is working a bird in that area--weird.
  ( she isn't bearded)

FYI....just thru out a couple key-key runs......got 2 gobbling.
One across the street, my tom of choice.
And one behind the house.....BUT he has 2 hens roosting 60 feet from the edge of my roof.

Re: Struttin 2014/05/28 19:31:43 (permalink)
Gobbler down......WOO  HOO......

Climbed up in my tree stand @ 5pm with Crossbow and waited.
Cackling in the field @ 6:00
First hen walks by @ 7pm Putting the whole way past.
Second hen walks right under me. Clucking alert.
Third hen comes under clucking alert.
Both walking and staring up at me.
Next comes a  jake.....nice boy 5"-6"
He looks at me and walks slowly past.
Shadow lurking in the brush......YES YES  COULD IT BE???
Nice tom, looking like 10" or more. He looks up at me and locks up tight @ 20 yards.
Okay middle dot, middle dot, middle dot.
To far of a move for a shot. He decides it not cool and starts to move up and away from me.
Its now or never I'm thinking. While he's looking away I
Pull up from the 10:00 position and swinging to the 2:00 position.
His pace is picking up. as middle dot hits his neck Away goes the bolt.
Flutter, flap, down ,up,flutter flap....WOO HOO.
A much bigger tom goes crazy gobbling.....
Hook the bow and down the stand and up the hill. He gets up and flaps over a hill.
This old man hot on his**** He gets 20 yards and lays down and I'm closing fast.
Get right up on him and up he goes, out of the woods and into an opening and attempts to get air borne. I run to tree now get the bow and take off after him.
ALMOST run right past him. he's playing dead in a ravine. Up he goes and flaps to the creek.
I get to creek edge and reload a bolt. I send a bolt thru his neck and pin him to the ground.
This ones in my  record book.....Happy man.
First bolt took his leg off at the knee. Realizing now he had moved ten yards should have used bottom dot...........I guess I suffered "Gobbler Fever"

20# 10" beard 1"spurs.....4# 5oz. breast meat.

Ten Point Titian.....Schwacker broad head (with blades deployed prior to flight).

pictures to follow.
