Mounting engine; not on transom

So, at the beginning of the summer I bought my first boat... 1976, 16ft, intruder tri-hull, 1979 85hp mercury....

And I am in the process of purchasing a 1985 mercury 9.9....

As you can hopefully see in the picture above, there isn't enough room on the transom to mount the 9.9 as a kicker beside the 85. And I'd rather not have to disconnect the power trim, steering, controls, gas line, etc......... Not to mention lifting the beast off, just to take the boat trolling once in awhile. So the point of this post is to ask if anybody has experience mounting an outboard anywhere besides the transom. Like on a bracket mounted beside the transom... Thanks in advance.

We mounted our kicker on a 'drop down' type bracket off to the side of the main motor.... biggest issue may be weight of the kicker.  I believe our mount (a Panther) is rated for 115 or 120 pounds.  Bracket mounts with bolts through transom and motor hangs from plate on back of it.  Make sure the weight of your main motor and kicker motor don't over stress the transom.  It should be OK, but with an older boat and heavy motors you need to be careful with the transom condition.

I may be completely wrong here, but is the drop down bracket that you are talking about, for a normal outboard? For some reason I was thinking that it was for some other type of engine.

the motor mount in the above link is what I use for my 9.9, only an older version.  works fine.  Ditto on the transom though.  Buddy and I ended up rebuilding mine after we discovered the blocks of wood that the motor bolts were screwed into.  You don't realize the number of rivets on an aluminum boat until you start drilling through them.  Entire transom area filled with nothing but rotted wood.  Redid the floor while we were at it.

Sorry for the oversized pics, not used to the sizing needed for the new forum here... used to a couple of other forums that automatically resize for posts...

Second pic was added to show the plate the motor mount drops over and how it can be placed.  Our transom was like yours, no way to 'hang' a second motor beside the first.  The rope you see in the first pic is simply added as a 'support sling' for when we are traveling at faster speeds out on the water or over rough water.  It helps absorb some of the shocks and we just tie it off to a cleat inside the boat.  Done to just take some pressure off of the transom and hopefully extend the life of the mount.  We have used it for 5 years or so now without problem.
