Any suggestions for new 9ft 8wt fly rod???

I'm in the market for a new 9ft 8wt fly rod. At the moment I am considering several options including TFO Professional Series, TFO TiCR, ECHO classic, ECHO 2, and Orvis Clearwater II. Any recommendations or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on using this mainly for bass and great lakes steelhead & I'm looking to spend roughly $200, give or take a little.

I have a 9' 9 wt ticr X, which I've used on Indiana tribs, out of need.  I've fished a 9' 8 wt ticr X on Erie tribs.  WAY too fast for roll casting water.  It'd be one of the last rods I'd want for Erie trib. fishing.  It's a canon for throwing a line though.  If I was to go to the lake front, it'd be one of the first rods I'd pick up.  Ticr is a bit slower, better roll casting rods out there though.  Can't speak for the others.

I would personally buy a 10 ft rod, after fishing a heavier weight rod like a 7,8,9 I think you will find out you would like it longer. You have some good choices there, dont overlook Diamondbacks and Croix's also.  For under $200 bucks, you can pick up a great rod.  My best advice is to pick some up and get a feel for what you like.  A fly rod is kind of like a ball mit, you gotta try them out.

I use a cabelas traditional 8wt for the erie tribs. I think they are like $80. I wanted a slow action because youre never making dry fly casts and unlike others I believe you DO need to drop to 4 and 5x sometimes to make the fish hit. I want something I cannot only feel the bottom with but also protect that light tippet. A fast action rod is not good for that, i dont care what anyone says. When a 10lb fish is shaking let the rod take the shock. Everyone always says, you cant land those fish on that light of tippet. I beg to differ, with the right rod in the right hands you can land the fish faster then the guy using fireline.

It may be a little slow for a LONG bass cast but I use mine for that too, just gotta get used to the action. Most guys arent used to it.

i got a 9'6" 7wt clearwater for the same kind of fishing. just got it in the fall and like it. the extra 6" does make a difference casting, highsticking while drifting and float tubing. ~dt

bass fishing and steelie fishing are 2 different ways of fishing and toe efficientlt fish both would be to have 2 different rods.  with that said a happy medium can be achieved without hurting either way very much.  however an 8 wt for erie steelies is over-powered.  i use a 9.5' medium-slow action 6wt and feel every bit in control  many people like a 7wt better and i would probably use 1 too if i had a 7wt.  for bass i use an 8 and 9 wt rods. the 8 is a med/fast and the 9 is fast and there is a big difference in how they handle flies, beyound the weight difference.  if there is any kind of wind you want the fast rod, especially when throwing big hair bugs or waterlogged zonkers.  i can do it with the 8 but the 9 does it so much easier.

so my advice is to pick which fishing you plan on doing more of, and lean heavily to that side and make due with the other type.  or the best way is to buy 2 rods.

    Hey Krott....

The new chickie doesnt allow bait in the fridge, so if i do have bait, i'll keep it at your girlfriends like always.  Oh yeah...tell her to quit putting so much starch in my shirts....

I have several TFO Professional Series fly rods.  I've been very pleased with them.  AT $149.95 and a lifetime warranty they are hard to beat.

The new clearwaters are great casters! They cast like a much better rod. Bit slower action than some of the others mentioned, but a great "feel" casting rod. I think that they might be the best sub $200.00 rod out there, but then again, I am a bit biased!
    Tight lines.
