Question about fly rods

I have a relative that wants to get into fly fishing. He has never done it before. Do you have any suggestions on Rods and Reels. I have heard that the quality of the reel isn't as important as the quality of the rod? What rod would you recommend in the $100-$150 range? What about a reel? What is a decent reel for a beginner? Appreciate if you could answer asap as this will be a Christmas gift.

Yes. he will be targeting mainly trout, panfish and bass. He would also like to start fishing Erie for steelhead. Is there a all around rod that can be used to target all these? I have no clue when it comes to fly fishing.

5 or 6 wt should get it done for all around, gonna be a bit heavy for panfish and a tad light for steel but should work all around. Check out echo and redington, good bang for the buck. A lot of places have the Redington CT series on sale for around $75, 9ft, 5 or 6 wt should do the trick.

Honestly like KJ said you can't beat Redington. You could look on ebay.. You can always find a Redington Red Fly floating around out there. If you want an all around great set up. Red Fly or Red Fly 2 paired with a Lamson KONIC. 6 wt is a good all around rod. I love using my 6wt for Steel. need to use a little more finesse but it is an awesome ride!

Redington Crosswater series 6 wt is ideal for anything but musky, big pike or salmon. Lots of feel and still has alittle back bone. Can get on Fishusa for under $75.00 reels go with anything that has a disc drag the clicker drags are junk and annoying. Cabelas actually has great value and right now on sale for under $30 but the low level sage or redington for under $100 are worth it as well.

Re: Question about fly rods 2014/01/03 02:22:34 (permalink)
Well my nephew bought his fly rod. I don't even know what he bought. Now I have a question for me. I have also been thinking of getting into it. I would like to just limit myself to fishing for panfish. I always see bluegills feeding on the surface and it looks like a fun way to catch some gills. I am totally dumb when it comes to fly fishing. What sized rod would I need to fish for panfish and maybe trout. Looking for best deal under $100. Also what types of flies do you use for panfish. Any special techniques. Any help will be appreciated.

5wt or under for what you wanna do. Bluegills aren't usually too picky. Just get a few colors of small basic dries. If you're not tying there are assortments for sale at all fishing stores including fishusa.

I picked up an Ant King 2/3 reel for bait fishing (<20$).  Loaded with ~30ft of level 3wt line.  And, I had an older 3wt rod lying around.  It does the trick for chubs to sunnies.  I usually use green and white (tied with white chenille) weenies #12 and smaller.  Mosquitos, or just about any small dry will take them from the surface.

If you plan on targeting them up top, buy a bottle of gink or something similar.

What is gink? Like I said, I have almost zero knowledge of fly fishing but it seems like it might be fun catching some gills. I thought I seen them before. Does someone sell small popper flies almost like a topwater bass lure only tiny?

Gink is just floatant to keep your fly on the surface.  Wally world/Kmart sells inexpensive poppers about the size of the end of your pinky finger.

If only going to target panfish i would grab a 3 wt. That being said if u ever wanna cross over to trout fishing a 3 wt will be plenty for 90% of the pa stocked trout. For a reel, i would try the okuma SLV. Its a cheaper, yet reliable reel, and ive had mine for years with no problems.

The only reason I suggested a 5 is that under that its a little harder to find an affordable beginners setup. And plus if you wanna cast something a bit bigger for, say, bass, or an indicator rig, a 5 would be better.

Ok thanks guys. I will be doing so shopping over the winter here. I have a lot to learn with it but it should be fun. I will probably never get into the whole steelhead thing since those kind of crowds you run into you Erie aren't my cup of tea.
