BH I also like to get high.....

Seriously though, I agree 100%

I DO like to be about as high as safely possible in a tree, and I am certain that it helps tremendously.

See I leave that at home, especially after I take my no-scent shower. I've been busted in my 20' stand with just a mere slight head turn. Not so much in my 22' stand.

Re: Rut 2013/10/23 20:51:34 (permalink)
I was able to get out for the first time Monday for the first 2 hours. I was seated around 5:40.  I got settled in and heard movement within 10 minutes. I watched what looked like 8 shadows go by right to left. They stopped 20 yards out in the dark and hung out for about 20 minutes(I assumed feeding or checking my mock sc****). To my left I heard a faint weak grunt. Then 10 seconds later to my left but moving up hill. He grunted about 6 more times as he ran--chasing something in the dark. After  awhile the running stopped and I silhouetted 2 on the edge of a field...Both larger doe. I decided to blow the bleat call.. I gave a few bleats and within 5 minutes 2 shadows emerged and mozzied towards me. As they came into view it was those 2 large doe. One came to stand under my ladder and the other 4 feet from the base. Both sniffing the wind. I had touched off a few sprays of doe in a can when I sat down. My mock sc**** I had dripped dominant buck lure in it Sunday afternoon. Never got the buck to show himself..... Very enjoyable morning until I had to go to work....
I also clicked a few rattles and blew some grunts after the two doe had left...

Anything I should of tried different??

How about Rattling in the dark???

Oh one thing I did different this pre season... I placed a large green garbage bag over the shooting rail and left it up at a 45 degree angle. It looked like someone was siting there....they may have got used to a solid object there

One more maybe useful tip. If you have the sky for a backdrop, try snow camo.

Bh, to answer all of your questions.

1. No that is not my stand, that is a buddy of mine hunting in his stand
2. The deer cam is there for trespassers / thefts not for looking at deer. It was there to look over the ladder stand I had it hidden really well
3. I don't / won't hunt in ladder stand. Don't like them.
4. Yes it is our property they were trespassing on there is no quad trail there they went off of the quad trail and onto our posted property.
5. Afraid to try nails, don't want to hurt anyone.

Congrats on the buck sugarfuzz.  Hopefully you can share some pics.
Crazy how only a 100 or 200 yds can change your day in the stand.

Heard and saw my first buck running a doe Friday. Lots of little bucks cruising. Still scraping hard in SW Pa. A sign that it is not there yet.

The rut is in full swing here up north.  Lots of bucks chasing does and seeing a lot of bucks running around by themselves with their noses to the ground lookin for a hot biotch.

Early to bed

Mika- hadda put scopes on everything long ago- couldn't be sure I was even close to being in the groove on the rear sight anymore with open- all fuzzy. Really miss the open sights. Tried some peeps for a while but that  didn't work either- took forever to be sure I was in the hole- lol.

Re: Rut 2013/11/05 19:06:18 (permalink)
Rut is going on...get out and enjoy the show....
Trail camera, 7 different bucks this past week.
Monday morning I had 4 doe in front....live decoys, no bucks
Looked over my shoulder and across the hollow a big boy stood up and moved up hill to check out a doe. Looked to be a ten, what a day to forget binocs.
Took a stroll found several rubs and scrapes.
Spotted a doe in posted property. I thought she has to have a man..... Sure as ****, 50 yards behind her was the biggest buck I have EVER seen in these parts. I will say if he's not 30" across he's not 10". G1's and G2's look to be in the 15"-18" range...Watched them for 20 minutes. He did look my way on a grunt call, but he had his girl. I did take a picture with my camera at full zoom, but his head was down.
Today, just a bay break I heard what I thought was  a hunter sneezing, but turned out to be a buck snort/ grunting. He was on a doe's****and booking. I needed them to break right and they went left. I saw another buck chasing a doe 20 minutes later. The 4 does came in and had no bucks again (I guess they aren't ready yet).

Took the wife out to dinner on toll 65 a nice buck rubbing on the side of the road at 3:30. After dinner went back past @ 5:15 he was still there tearing up a tree.......

I can't wait until my next day off.........But's not till Monday...

Oh, a buddy went with me on Monday and sat the opposite side of the hollow. He spooked 8 turkey on his way in. He had 8 ring necks run past him. He was only there 2 hours

This one busts me up in the stand. Thought I heard something behind me and had to turn all the way around in stand. There he is, staring up at me. Stupid decoy was facing the wrong way too. Boy did that teach me something about decoy positioning. He was definately gonna get a pass, but i was just miffed at myself for getting busted.

Been seeing alot of bucks in the morning cruising. Seen 6 this morning. Afternoons have been slow for me.

I passed what would have been my best buck to date Tuesday morning. He was a 8 point that snapped off his left G2 at the base making him a 7 point. As he was walking past I saw the snapped point but it wasn't until he passed through all of my shooting lanes and starting walking away did I realize that he had 6 inch brow tines and a 18 inch spread!! I was sick for the rest of the morning.

Hunting today sucked for me.  If my entire season could be summed up in one word, it would be "windy."  Figure they will be on the hot and heavy for the next few days, going out tomorrow evening then again on Saturday.

Re: Rut 2013/11/08 09:49:43 (permalink)
Saw a gnarly 4 point last night shortly after 4 pm and then at 4:40, had kids on a quad and small dirt bike cruise by on the neighbors property.  They came to the property corner (4 properties meet), hoped off and went up into the adjacent land for 15 or 20 min.  Kind of killed the rest of the night for me.  No biggie, just got to roll with it.  The wind made it pretty chilly.  And for the kick in the peanuts, a buck and doe were in the briars right next to my truck.  It was too dark to see but I could smell the tarsal stink when I got by my truck and there were 2 deer for sure.

Should have just camped out on the top of my cap, I suppose.
Was going to go out this AM but slept in.  Saving it so I can be out every day at least a little from tomorrow til the end.

Accuweather is forecasting a possible snow event/storm for us mid week next week.  That would be nice to hunt rut in SW PA with accumulating snow on the ground.  Been awhile for that.  Good luck fellas.  It's now or never.

Yes they are Eman... I saw a big boy pushing a field on Thursday evening just before dark.. He walked thru a group of does (4) smelled them then moved on to another group. Watched him disappear on the heels of a doe.
Last night I looked into front yard and there was 4 doe. They became agitated and sure as **** here came a 7 point. He had his head forward and cocked up . Nose was flared. He pushed them in circles for a while until they all split up and ran off.

Not liking the wind tonight...But going to be in the tree early tomorrow..
I think Mon evening will be fantastic with the front coming in also..
