Salmon trip, Part 2

Hello All
Thanks for the advice from my previous post.  For those that don't know, I'm headed to Burt's dam in a couple weeks. Gonna try to get a few big browns, as well as a salmon or two. A friend told me that my size 10 and 12 egg patterns won't stand up to the  salmon if I hook into one. He said the hooks will break and it is a waist of time to target the browns, because of the number of salmon in the creek. I know my patterns will hold up to a 30 inch fish. I feel confident they will hold up to a large salmon. Not sure if the line will hold. Anyway. What is the bait/fly used to catch these fish? How should I set up my fly rod. I will also have my spinning rod. How should I set up the spin outfit? Any info on how to approach catching a few fish without looking like I've never had a fishing rod in my hands will help.  Thanks?

I use size 10 scud hooks for my salmon and steelhead fishing and bend a few every year but they hold up pretty well.  Scuds are typically about 2x thick so that helps.

Estaz eggs work well and your typical glo bugs.

I tie up a simple zonker pattern in many colors for the salmon or steel.  Sometimes the fish just key in on a certain color and you need to have a bunch of options in your boxes.

Pattern is usually on a size 4 or 6 hook.

    Large bead or cone head
    chenille body
tie in zonker at hook bend and at the beadwhip finish and move on.
(I do really well with a hot orange bead and all black body)

You'll lose a ton of flies up there so no need to be fancy with your flies.  Check the regulations before you go because NY is drastically different than PA.

Risen, would you care to post a pic of this pattern or better explain the proportions? I'm fairly new to tying and I'm always looking for simple productive patterns. I tie a few that sound very similar to this. I'd just like to see whats working for you.

been having alot of luck with a very simple pattern i tie
    using a long shank hook
tie in a wrap the full length of the shank with .2 lead
go to the curve of the hook, i'm using a dark blue yarn called (midnight mo-hair) but dark blue dubbing would work the same, wrap that up to about 1/8th inch from the eye
tie in black estez and do 1 1/2 to 2 wraps, tie it off
    works like a charm

    Hey all
Caught a few. Only one was legally "hooked". Had a good time. The experience was one I wont forget soon.
