Bluegill Fry
I'm considering tying a bluegill fry pattern on a jig hook with barbell/hourglass eyes. I have a few questions that you guys could help me with. First, what is the best material to use? Second, how do you put the stripes on them? Sharpie? Third, if you know of any Youtube vids that could help me, would you be kind enough to post them? I've looked and can't find one that is helpful. I'm brand new at this, so please, treat me like the newbie that I am. I really know very little about tying. Thanks guys.

You could always use a clouser type pattern, the stripes would come from the dyes on the materials that you would use, you could throw in some marabou too, you can find patterns for clousers on YouTube

you could do a deer hair fry. put the colors on with a paint maker or sharpie.

Sounds like a deadly pattern for the Fall. I'm curious to see what you come up with. I'd suggest adding some sort of flash. If I have some time in the next few weeks, I think that I'll tie a few up too.

I'm definitely going to use flash. Not sure what, but something flashy. This thing is going on a #12 jig hook, so I don't know if I want to use deer hair or not. Deer hair is pretty stiff. I hate working with feathers. lol. I'm going to play with it tonight.

I've had success using doll hair on clouser patterns and on jigs (both for small panfish/steelhead jigs and larger bucktails). For some reason the fly shops carry better doll hair than the craft stores... Longer and more color options, at least the craft stores that I have checked. Although, for a bluegill fry, I'm sure the shorter stuff will work. It is that same fiber that the old troll pencil topper things with the crazy hair had. It flows really well in the water. Fly shops carry something called polar fiber which has a similar movement in the water.
For the gill, you might want stiffer, to keep the shape though?

I think I'll end up mixing softer fibers with stiffer ones. I want the rigidity to hold shape, but the softness to get plenty of action. I'll just have to experiment, I guess.

I checked out some baby bluegill patterns last night, a lot of folks using FTD Congo hair. Similar to EP from what I have read. Cheap enough to give it a shot. Some interesting colors.

I tried tying one last night. Can you say, "Epic failure?" LOL! Ugh. It's not as easy as it looks. I tried using EP on top and flashabou on the bottom. It wasn't pretty.

EP top and bottom. If you need flash, get something stiff like EP, and tie it in the same way, or just use it as your tail.

Tying things like blue gill patterns are on the high end of the difficulty scale. Especially on something as small as a #12 hook.

D, I've noticed... lol. I think I'm way over-reaching my very limited abilities on this. I'll probably give up on the idea for a while and come back to it when I've mastered the basics.

look for butterfish patterns... they are a common striper fly
Look at the use of EP fibers or reverse hollow bucktail
