Grass Carp

Recently a friend & I were fishing for Bull-gills when he hooked & landed, then released a 37" Grass Carp on a jig & meat. the fish was very thin for a Carp I thought. I didn't think that they could be caught on hook & line. But I was wrong again I guess.   sam

I am not trying to sound like a smart****but how else would you catch them? I have no experience with grass carp so just wondering. Hell, I've never even seen one I don't think.

They're typically vegetarian, so they normally would ignore 99 percent of a fisherman's typical offerings. I've never caught one but have had one hit bread, and have even seen them taking grass clippings off the surface.

You need a permit to have them. Some have been released in Pa waters. My buddy bought 40 for his farm ponds. The Queen caught 1 on a worm and bobber, though.....WF

The brother of one of my buddies caught this one yesterday on bread
on out of public pond in western pa. It was 50" and maxed out the scale at 50# before it was off the ground ! took 45 mins to land on med/heavy bass gear.

They are supposed to be sterilized at the hatchery before they are sold so that they can't reproduce. They were introduced in America to control the weeds & algae in ponds & lakes. The problem is that if there are too many in a body of water they do too good of a job of eliminating the weeds which hurts the fish pop. by eliminating food & cover. Also I was told that they can exceed 100# & are hard to catch. I do know that they fight very well when hooked. We tried to get a few for Twin Lakes to help with the weeds, but the PF&BC wanted us to put barriers up so that the Carp couldn't get away, plus the cast of buying a few stopped us from doing so.   sam

That definitely is one beautiful fish.
My friend caught one in the 20lb range a few years ago. We weren't catching much, until he baited up with a glazed doughnut. He nearly lost his rod and fought it for a good 15 minutes before we got it in the net. Then the bottom of the net ripped out and back out to the middle of the pond it went, with what was left of the net. He did get it back to shore, and we got it landed. It was a crazy battle to watch for sure.
