WOW, Hot Tuna! That goes back a long time ago! They were a Jefferson Airplane spinoff band. Many people in Jefferson Airplane were in Hot Tuna and some later got involved in Jefferson Airplane. I kind of doubt many people on this site are aware of them.

I saw the Airplane at the Eastman Theatre in 1967 or 8, about 6 mos before After Bathing at Baxter's came out, then again in the Volunteers era, and saw the Tuna a number of times, as a duo and with Papa John. I think there is more depth here than you think (mainly because so many of us are getting old!)

Re:music thread 2013/09/04 17:44:43 (permalink)
Hot Tuna, Twobob and Coldfront- Thanks guys for "carrying" this thread! It's truly a pleasure to read about your past experiences/knowledge and I recant an earlier post when I erroneously wrote "I kind of doubt many people on this site remember them" [Hot Tuna]. Re: one of Twobob's earlier posts- "Tuna and I thought we were the only ones..... that cared about music". No my friend, there are others and like Twobob, I also "listen to a wiiiiide spectrum of music". My current music interests are not well known by mainstream music lovers and perhaps I'll post some things in the future if anybody is interested at being exposed to things that you probably are not aware of. Which reminds me, has anyone heard of a musician that incorporates a lot of rap into his CW music? I don't remember his name, never heard of him or any of his songs and don't have contact with the person that told me about him. It might be interesting as he's combining two very different styles of music, but overall I don't like rap, particularly when the song glorifies thug life, has an excess of profanity or demoralizes women. There are some very good rap songs that has none of the above and like any genre, exceptions exist. Reading the posts brought back some memories and trivia. I used to have a Hot Tuna poster and one of the guys was sitting down with his right leg extended forward. Does anyone remember that one? Papa John Creach was born in Beaver Falls, PA. Savoy Brown used to play primarily blues, but it was still evident in later releases like Hellbound Train, Jack the Toad and Hold Your Fire, three of my most liked songs by the band. Bill Bruford was very briefly in the band. One heck of a percussionist and I didn't write "drummer" as he was much more than that. He went on to other ventures and the four that come to mind are King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and UK, but undoubtedly there are others. Re: Coldfronts' post about [Jim] Morrison "was really weird"- He had a F upped childhood and no doubt it affected him, not to offer that as an excuse as Jim did things that weren't acceptable and especially so to an older generation. Some of his behaviors are attributed to his severe alcoholism, but he also had the performer part in him and he did things to shock people.
Midnight Special, Taj [Mahal], Jethro Tull, Manassas, Fairport Convention- all great memories. Nobody mentioned Quicksilver Messenger Service. A killer instrumental was Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder. Nicky Hopkins is an accomplished pianist and this song really showcases his extraordinary talent. You can check it out on you tube by entering the bands' name or "Shady Grove full album". There was more I wanted to write, but this post is getting way too long so in closing I wanted to sincerely thank Hot Tuna, Twobob, Coldfront and Lucky13 for all of your links to you tube as there were many great performances by various musicians. I hope that nobody was left out. Thanks again guys!

Thanks Tuna I really enjoyed that.

F5000  I looked around for some good QMS to post but couldn't come up with something that related my feelings at the time I was looking.
No doubt they will find their way into this thread eventually.

You're quite welcome Hot tuna and I as well enjoyed your memories. As a Rastaman would say [ no, I'm not one] " You tell the story and I experience it". That might be paraphrasing a bit, but you get the gist of it. I don't know what happened to the picture for Jorma, but it's completely washed out. Definitely some very fine pickin' though! Thanks again! ! !
Please excuse my ignorance 2B, but what are "QMS's"? Anyway, I appreciate your efforts!

Thanks Hot Tuna! Definitely love the Devil With Blue Dress On! In another post, Topdog99 was requesting another one than the one I had previously. She was reaching up on her high heels by a telephone pole and had a long pony tail. Next week I'll try to bring one out that is a bit shy, but you've seen her before. Another board member was kind enough to share with me. This one is begging to have unnatural, ungodly and sinful things done to her, LOL! P.S. She likes to squeal also. Weee, Weee, Weee! ! !

well, well, I will give it a try.. somehow I feel failure coming but try I will..Since 2bob put that box of rain up, I had to dig deeper..This my friends is my all time favorite GD run..Radio City Music Hall 1980 .. The Reckoning :They say Watkins Glen and Barton Hall was the one, and I'm sure the vibe was way cooler but for Musicianship and "The Show" , I love this run !! Lets start off with the Acoustic portion of the Set .. Great Bird Song: Now a little Electric to bring in the Cold Rain and Snow :)

Well I like the devil in blue myself.. Thanks :)
Must say the very best thing about the new look site is the youtube..
It just seems to pop with the background, almost a 3-d effect..and it plays while I type..
Maybe it's the thrill of just getting home to turn it on but geesh, it looks good as I work back through this thread.. What you folks think ? I'm crazy?

Was at the Glen and I found their show lacking, maybe just me but they were out of tune alot and tuning the rest of the time.
Sorry about crossing the thread line Tuna .
I'm getting old and forgot about this one.
Really just prodding you with some Dead that I could work into the conversation going on about the rain.
And it was.
Oh and a little QMS for the blue dress.

Back to Summer Jam.
The vibe was incredible.

I was front row center for the Dead.
Temp was hot.
Not a cloud in sight.
No trees for shade.
People going down from the heat.

A friend and I filled a dozen gallon bottles with water and started through the crowd passing out sips and moving forward.
It was like Moses the way the sea of people parted to let us thru (for a drink)

Funny story but during the Brothers I was sitting on a blanket toasted and toasting in the sun.
Some buffoon comes up and stands on my hand.
My reaction (in pain) was to punch him in the sac to get his attention but as I am balling my fist I look up and see its a friend of mine from home.
Quarter million peeps there and he steps on my hand.
What are the odds

The Devil [not too skinny and not too fat] is back for a visit Hot Tuna, Twobob and Topdog99.  She was my 1st choice for an avatar. I had ~ 12 photos and narrowed it down to ~6. All are similar as all have a lot of cl[b****, but the Devil sold me because of the form fitting blue dress. The 6 photos were filed, so some of her friends will drop in now and then, but she'll always be back. Thanks to all for your replies! 2B, love your photo and clever caption "Good day sunshine". That song will probably pop into my head the next time I see a sunrise. Hot Tuna, love your avatar. It got me thinking "Won't be long now". Too bad it's such a short season. I remember when winter and all of the seasons were longer as each one would transition into the next.
