Downrigger weight?????

OK guys,I bought a pair of Cannon downriggers to mount on my boat for this year. They're brand new in the box without the cannonball weights. Now I need to find some weights for them. How do you know what weight to get?I've seen them go from 4 lbs. to 12 lbs.I'm thinking somewhere in the middle, like a 6 or 8 lb. to begin with. Also, whats your favorite release for walleyes? Any ideas or recommendations??

Hi Ron,  Fishing on Erie Id go with either 10 or 12lb downrigger weights.   You get to much blow back with lighter weight ones.  Having heaver weighted  downrigger balls keeps them closer to the boat and reduces blowback.  We use chamberlain releases and there great.  Ive heard great things about blacks releases as well.  I know poor Richards has a good selection of downrigger weights.

Thanks Rough House,You've been a GREAT help.Years ago I used to go with a friend who fished for trout and salmon in Lakes Erie and Ontario, but I never found out what weights he used.I do know that he used Offshore release's,but I was hoping for an update on the newer releases.Thank you sooo much.I'll be checking on the Chamberlain's and I've heard of Blacks.Wish you all the luck on the lake this year.

I fished the big lakes from 79- 92 and did it all, before most knew how to do it. A lot of trail and error. I used 10 lb ball, like RH said kepts your lure at the depths you want, I'd say your about 4 feet off from your counter with a 10 pounder.

My riggers get very little use, mostly run dipsy and weights.... I have used 8 pounders with good success. If I didn't have electric riggers I probably wouldn't use them at all...

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.
