Rivet Repair

I have a 1964 14ft Shallow V Starcraft that I am going to rehab this spring. I bought it five years ago and it's been fine until this past season.
I believe I have a small leak coming from old rivets on the bottom of the boat. My Question Is - what product is best for sealing rivets without replacing??. I've seen products such as jbweld, alumaweld, But I also came across products such as Coat-It or Gluv-It that have received good reviews.
Any recommendations for a reliable sealant or any insight from experience about any other products would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Is it just one or two rivets that are leaking, or a longer section along a seam?
JB Weld isn't "waterproof", you want a product called "Marinetex"...basically JB that is designed for wet areas.

Also, when the sections are riveted together, a sealant is applied to the joint before it is riveted.
Sometimes on older boats, that sealant shrinks from age and pulls away from the rivets. I have read on another forum on old aluminum boats where guys have heated the seam with a propane torch to soften and "re-flow" the sealant in the joint.
HOWEVER, with that being said, you need to be careful with the heat because over heating the seam can make the sealant boil out and cause bigger issues!

Not exactly sure where the leak is coming from, I believe it is from a few older rivets. I did JB Weld them last year which would explain why it didn't hold. Thanks for that info. I will definitely look  into Marinetex as well as the site jigs listed above. Hopefully that solves the issue.

You can put the garden hose in your boat to find the leaking rivets, just don't overload your trailer... There are several products that can be used to fix the leaks EM mentioned a good one...

That's some big time $ for just a few rivets to repair.  My 14 footer run about without a floor had loose rivets and all I did was drill out the old ones, bought some stove bolts with nylon nuts.  Put some waterproof silicon around the shank and head of the bolt and screwed down the nut and cut off the extra shank of the bolt that stuck above the nut and they have ben water tight for the last 5 years.  Total cost abot $5.

I had the same problem in an older boat I used to own.  Once I found the leaky rivets, I applied 3M 5200 Marine Fast Cure and it solved the problem.  I would put the boat in the water and look close to see where the water is coming in. It should be pretty obvious which rivets are leaking.

An old timer I use to fish with cleaned the seams on his 12 ft, wiped them down with achol when dried use that alum sealer for his gutters the full lenght and never had another leak. I'm kind of old fashion, I like the water on the outside not inside wwith me.

Cut a hole in your boat, and replace with a screen door and Flex Seal.  It works on TV, so must be good.

^^ HAHAHA  I've seen those commercials funny stuff.

I went with MarineTex fast cure, The JB Weld I had on last year held well while it lasted, MarineTex is waterproof so it should do the job.

BD- I think I will fill the boat just to make sure there are not any additional rivets leaking

When you guys are talking about JB Weld not being waterproof, are you talking about the regular stuff or the JB Weld Marine?

Screen door nonsense aside, I was thinking of using flexseal or an equivalent product to fix the leaking rivets/seams on my aluminum boat. Is there a reason to think it won't work?

I used the JB Marine on some screw holes in the transom due to fishfinders. Worked most of the season than leaked again but in all fairness maybe it let go from motor vibation. When Paul used that gutter seal he used the stuff the contractors used and as far as I know he never had any trouble.

DrumR- I used regular JB WELD last year in a fix, it worked for awhile but after 3-4 trips out it was back to leaking. Didn't have alot of time or space to fix it properly. Now that I have some extra time, so before the season I'll attempt to do a appropriate fix.

Preacher- Look at that "Coat-it" stuff the reviews are good and I guess is pretty similar to the flexseal stuff in that commercial.

Thanks BL that "coat-it" looks like good stuff. 1 one gallon kit should give me two coats, and do it cheaper than even Walmart's version of flexseal. Plus i read you dont need to totally strip it to recoat in the future just rough it up and apply a fresh coat.
I'm seriously thinking about ordering some of this stuff.

Where can you find this coat-it product ? Can it be used on the outside or does it have to coat the inside of the boat ? I just replaced my floors year before so I'd like to avoid tearing them up.

From what I saw it could be used either inside or outside. Ideas a review from guys applying it to the outside of their boats & they seemed to feel it cut down on drag and improved their drift.
I think you need to order it from the manufacturer Tap Plastics.

The only issue that I would see with the coating stuff on the outside, is scraping off when going on the trailer, or beaching the boat ect.  Get a little nick in it, and the water will likely work it's way in.  If it means ripping out your decking, then I'd go with the outside.  If it lasts 5-10 years, then reapply until your floors need redone.  Depending on how complex the flooring is of course.

Another thing to think about if coating the outside, it will slow you down most likely due to the increased turbulence/friction if it isn't a smooth coating that can we waxed or coated.  Not a big deal if you have a big motor but if you are the very edge of planing out on a heavier boat with only a 9.9/15 or so, it could be enough to keep you from getting on plane.
