In the early 80's I worked at a bar in Limestone NY and some of the guys would go to Erie netting smelt.
The net had a long handel and fine mesh.
I think they walked along the shore with a light and scooped them into 5 gallon buckets.
Some would clean them-remove the head and guts, others would just dredge them in flour and deep fry them.
Either way with a few beers and hot sauce was ok with me.
